Business And Professional Cliain Asked To Set Up Blood Donor Register For TB Patients In County At the monthly meeting of I members to spt im th> - At the monthly meeting of the Durham Business and Pro fessional Chain, Dr. A. D. Coop er, Director of the Health De partment Chest Clinic, and Joe Beebe, III, Health Educator, made an api>eal asking their particiitotion in a " specific Health Deparment activity, namely, “The TB Control Pro? gram.” The Chain was asked to set up a Blood Donor Register for Durham County TB patients that are hospitalized at Gravely Sanatorium in Chapel Hill. Blood donors are asked to give blood for TB {iatients who un dergo a major surgical opera tion, that is removal of a por tion of the lung, entire lung or ribs. It was pointed out that this register would be used only when a TB patient was unable to secure blood from their rela tives or friends. The project was accepted iy the chain and a committee ap pointed to work with the Health Educalor Tn“ Heveloplng the register. Members of the committee are: Mrs. Jean White, R. N., E. C. Turner, Rev. Wm. Fuller, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and L. B. Frazier. The Health Educator has worked very closely with the committee in developing a sur vey that would enable it to ob tain the necessary information that owners and managers of members to set up tlje register. The Blood Donor Register Committee and Health Educator are compiling information re ceived from questionaires re turned. It has been observed that owners and manager of businesses of the chain have been successful in getting more than 90 per cent of their em ployees to sign name on regis ter. Opening remarks were iiven by the President of the Bauid Mothers' Club, Mrs. Cleo Um- stead. She thanked the public in general for its cooperation in the efforts of the Band Mothers and solicited its continued co operation in the efforts of the Band Mothers. Two selections were rendered by the band, “Streamline Limited" and “Blues In The Night,” under the direction of Mr. J. H. Alex ander. The fashion parade was presented with' Church, home and sport scenes being repre sented- The following variety num bers were rendered: Solo, Miss Geraldine Dillard; ,Solo, Curtis Norwood; Reading, Mrs. B. The Women’s Auxiliary of the Durham Academy of Medi cine entertained the Pre-Cllnl-' cal Students of Lincoln School of Nursing Friday, February 11, 1955 at the home of Dr. and Mrs. R. P. Randolph. The Rev S. iP. Perry, the pastor of the Zion Church was th* ^iciating minister. Mrs. Black was bom in Scotlstnd County, the daughter of the late Mr, and Mrs. Dennis Campbell. At an early age she joined the St. James AMEZ church of Red Springs. In 1906, she was united in marriage with Lee Black. To this union eight children were bom, four boys and four girls. In 1923 she moved to Dur ham and joined the St. Mark AMEZ Church with which she held her membership until the time of her death. She was an active member of the church working in the auxiliaries. At the time of her death, she was the president of Missionary Group No. One. Mrs. Black was active in commimity affairs. She was a Gold Star Mother of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Le gion, a member of the Safety Club, Worthy Counselor of the Phylatha Court No. 604, and Worthy Matron of Prospect Chapter No. 379 of Eastern Star. She leaves as survivors six children, Wellington Black of Durham and Charles Black of New York City; Mrs. Beulah Decoz of BrooUyn, New York; Mrs. Pearl Felder, Mrs. Aman da Wallace and Mrs. Margaret Harvey of Durham; nine grand children, five great grand children, four sisters tuid two brothers.
