WiMteria Bridge Club Monday evening, January 23, the Wisteria Bridge Club was entertained by Mrs. Mary H. Shepard at her home on Fay etteville Street, with her daughter, Blrs. Dorothy S. Man ley serving as hostess, who In her fine, calm manner served a most tasty menu of Creole Gumbo with the usual accom paniments and Baked Alaska. Special guests were Mrs. An nie Daye Smith of New Bern, N. C. and Mrs Mae Barnes, Mrs. Ann L. Taylor, Dr. Ruth Flowers, and Miss Teressa Shepard. Mrs. Taylor (ras the winner of the first gu#st prize, and Mrs. Smith the second ^uest prize. The first club prize was won by Mrs. Lil Buchanan and second club prize, Mrs. Chat Riv^a. Other members playing were Mesdames Julia Harris, Lovey McCoy, Eva Goins, C. Ruth Edwards and Mary Shepard. Attends Reading Conference Mrs. Lola H. SoUce of Lin- wood Avenue left by plane last we^k for Philadelphia, Pa., where she spent a week at Temple University attending a Reading Conference. The sessions were very stimu lating and helpful. One of her major interests v/as the im provement of reading. She has spent several Summer Sessions at Temple and the University ot Michigan. Mrs. Solice is Supervisor of Granville County Schools. Mrs. Carrie Saunders conduct ed the devotion. Bible quota tions were said by all beginning with the letter “D”. President Lillian McKay presided over the business session. The club’s anniversary win be held on Sunday, February Sth. The public is invited. At this point, the hostess took charge and served a delicious dinner and dessert of home made ice cream and cake. Assisting the hostess were Mrs. Mary Hayes, Gilbert Armstrong and John Mason. Members present were Mary Alston, Mesdames Carrie Saunders, Lillian McKay, Lu cille Starks, Martha Armstrong, Mary Hayes, Virginia Pitchford and Mable Powell. The group adjourned to meet next with Mrs. Hattie Geer on Dunstan Street. Saturday evening, January 21, The Friendly Workers Sick Club held its first meeting of the neW year at the home of Mrs. Ruth Holloway, 201 Bar- niim Street. The meeting was opened with devotions led by the vice president, Mrs. Cecelia Evans and the meeting was pre sided over by the president, Mrs. Ella M. Andrews. The club paid out to sick members, $62.23. Members pre sent were Mesdames Percy Len ny, Winnie Herndon, Pearl Bennett, Arletha Weeks, Effie Weaver, Mary Spence, Novella Crawford, Cecelia Evans, Ella M. Andrews, Grover Fowler and Mrs. Arletha Weeks thank ed the hostess for the wonder ful hospitality. f pn Sunday, February Sth, the A. and B. Missionary Circle is celebrating their 9th Anni versary at Kyles Temple Chur ch at 3:00 p.m. Guest speaker for the occasion will be Rev. George Tharrington, pastor of the church and music will be furnished by St. Marie’s Male Chorus. The public is cordially invited to attend. Presidents and missionaries of all churches are invited. Prizes will be awarded. The Floral Club of Ebenezer Baptist Church met Sunday, January 22, at 4 o’clock at ihe home of Mrs. Addie Barbee’s at 1309 Glenn Street. Those present were; Mrs. Barbee, the hostess, Mesdames Iceleen Josey, Doreena Roach, Mattie Holloway, Mattie Brown, Ua Mae Evans, Roney Primas, Effie Chavis, Martha Stanley, Jessie O’Neil, Zelma Adams, Addie Smith, Annie Belle Car- rick, and Mildred Mangum. Ulysees Adams, Rev. J. A. Brown- and W. W. Barbee were present also. Plans were made for the club’s Anniversary. A short program consisting of a solo by Mrs. Carrick, re marks by Mrs. Stanley and Mr. and Mrs. James E. Riston are shown, following their marriage in Durham on December 31 at the St. Titus Epw- copal Church. The Garden Gate was opened by Gardener Carrye Cole after which a brief business session was held.
