The meeting was opened with a Mng and prayer. It was encouraging to note that the membership was steadily in creasing. There were seventeen members present, namely: Mes- dames Mittie Furgest, Novella Brown, Lela O'Neal, Effie King, Jeanette Gee. Nancy Harris, Anna McCoy, Fannie Smith, Ju lia Windbush, ilelen Clay, Mar garet Allen, Nannie Torrence, Essie Trice, Ovella Lymphin, Misses Antha Smith and Willie M. Davis and Alphonza Beeves. All were happy to be able to make a small donation to a needy family in the community. The next metting will be with Mias Antha M. Snxith, 768l fax Street. Any interested per son may join. Arrived In Own Plane Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Edwards and small son Gerald Jr., of Tuslceegee Institute, Tuskeegee, Alabama, flew to Durham last week in their own plane and spent three dnys with his mo ther, Mrs. Ruth Edwards and family of Fayetfeville Street The trip was continued to Femandina Beach, Florida, where they spent the weekend. House Guests President and Mrs. A. Elder of N. C. College had as their house guests last week Mrs. El der’s mother, Mrs. Mayme Hol mes and a frlnnd, Mrs. Eva Neal of Atlanta, Ga , Mrs. Neal has returned home. Mrs. Holmes at tended the commencement Ex ercises at the college and will spend a few more days in the Friendly City—Durham. Attended Commencement Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Clement of 206 Pekoe Street, left last Friday for Atlanta, Ga., where they attended the graduation of their daughter, Miss Alexine Clement at Spelman College. Attended Graduation Mr. McKinley Evt^s of Balti more, Maryland, was the week end guest of Mr. and Mrs. Moses R. Norwood of Cecil Street, where he attended the gradu ation of his daughter Miss Ca therine Lili Evans at North Carolina College. City Garden Clubs The Azalea Garden Club sponsored worfhip services at White Rock Baptist Church Sunday morning May 27. Mrs. Effie Cotton presided and made introductory remarks. Mrs. Roxie Davis gave highlights of garden clubs and activities in Durham and North Carolina. Mrs. Roxie Rowland, the past president of N. C. State Gardep Clubs introduced and presented Mrs. Bessie Redding, president of N. C. State Garden Clubs. Mrs. Redding h^'ought greetings and salutations from the State Garden Clubs. Dr. Miles Mark Fisher, pastor of White Rock Baptist Church, preached from tWe topic Grow Some Sun Flow ers. The Senior Choir and the Junior Gospel Chorus rendered lovely music. Over one hundred garden ers representing 15 clubs of the city enjoyed the fellowship in worship. Ayden, N. C. Mount Olive Missionary Bap tist Church, 715 West Ave., Ay den, held its regular worship services Sunday May 27. Sub ject “Two Different Acts of the Samaritan”. Flowers were pre sented in memory of the late Deacon Gerald Blount by his grandchildren. B.T.U. services were held on tiie Fourth Sun day. All will attend Men’s Day. Mrs. Lydia Scott and J. Pupils Awarded Prizes Beverly Hamm and Carolyn Walker received awards during Commencement at W. G. Pear son School. Beverly won tlie highest scholariihip award. The Alaska M. Pcaraon Award was won by Caroiyn, the second highest scholarvhip award. The Minnie C. Amey Award, Caro lyn took highest honors for the Declamation Contest. These awards were in the primary grades. Both little girls received beautiful bracelets as gifts from their teacher. The children are in grade 3. THeir teacher is Miss B. L. Foster. Motored To Virginia Mrs. Luella Junes, Stanford Lee Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Elliott and Mrs. Lena Carver motored to Petersburg, Va., on Sunday May 20, attending the funeral of a relative, Mrs. Lottie Johnson Ford. Nursery Pupils To Graduate In Exercises Seventy-five children from the Scarborough Nursery School will participate in commence ment exercisers Tuesday night at 7:30 in the W. G. Pearson School. Thirty-one pupils of the school, a United Fund Service, will be graduated at the exer cises and will enter public schcjol in the fall. The pupils will dramatize Cinderella and Prince Charm ing. Cinderella, Dorethea Estes, Step-mother, Delores Page, Step-sister, Valerea McKenzie and Patilla Mason; Prince Char ming, James Young, King, Dwight Price; the Queen, Pa tricia Williams; Duke, Richard Baines; Herald, Gerald Justice and Fairy Queen, Magaline Salisbury. Roberson, Directress Reports From Federation Confab Heard At Final Utopia Club Meet The Utopia Club met Friday evening with Mrs. Elnora Smith on Nelson St. This was the clos ing meeting until Fall. Mrs. Smith's beautiful la.vn and flower garden were Ugiited with Japanese Iiantems, and tables set up for service, but old man cold weather slipped in and spoiled plans. However, everyone enjoyed visiting in the garden for a short period. The meeting was pre sided over by the president, Mrs. Mabel Mabry. Inspirhig de votions were lead by Mrs. Free land Price. Mrs. Smith’s neice. Miss El- nora Joyner and Nephew Char les Joyner thrilled guests and members with song and recita tions. The highlight of the evening was the glowing report by delegate Wilmer Milum on activities during the State Fede ration of Clubs meeting recent ly in Fayetteville. The report was thoroughly enjoyed and aU felt as though they were at the meeting. Mrs. Sallie Harris and her committee on a slate of of ficers for the year reported and the entire slate was unanimous ly elected for the next t^o years. President, Mrs. Mable Mabry, Vice president, Mrs. El nora Smith, Secretary, Mrs. Lena Richardson, Treasurer, Mrs. Wilmer Miliun. The committee was given a vote of thanks for such a splen- ded did job. Guests present were Mesdames H. Brown, N. Alston, A. Perry, Perry, friends from Louisburg. Miss Constance Young, Mes dames Bhrelyn Thorpe, Lyda Wray, Roxie Rowland, Hessie Mitchell. Each were presented and gave encouraging remarks. The hostess assisted by Mrs. V. Joyner nnd Mrs. Martha Jones served a most delectable buffet style n'enu. All were reluctant to leave. as Mrs. Smith proved such a wonderful hostess. The fall meeting will begin in October and all joined hands and sang “Till We Meot. DORCAS CLUB AT LIBRARY At the invitf.tion of the Dau ghters of Dorcas Club,” a num ber of women responded and were cordially welcomed at the Warren Stanford Library on Thursday evening May 31 to hear reports from tne recent meeting of the .State Federation of Negro Women’s Clubs, held at Fayetteville Teachers Col lege. Mrs. E. R. Merrick pre sided graciously. An enjoyable devotion period was held. Miss Constance S. Young, Daughter delegate, gave a rather full account ol the 3 days ses sion as held. Mrs. Wilma Milum of the TJtopias Club spoke enthusiasti cally of her impressions of the Federation meeting as did Mrs. M. Horton of the Union Baptist Missionary Society. Mrs. Wm. Fuller from the Mt. Zion Baptist Church was also present. Mrs. LuSybil Taylor repre sented the Model Mother’s Club. She is an active member of the State Federation. The Junior department of the Federation was enlarged by the acceptance of t^vo fine joys and responsibilities ol club life. Dr. Charlotte H. Brown, a founder of Fed. in N. C. and honorary president, was able to attend all meetings and all were hap py. She told of hei work among many of our sainted workers departed.
