l^AGB ^ the CAROLINA TIMES SATURDAY, JULY 14, 19M Jones Counly Pann Youth Is New President Of State 4-H GREENSBORO A Jones Ctmnty farm youth was elected president of the SUte 4-H Club Council at the 26th annual 4-H Club Week celebration held at AfcT Col lege, June 25-30. Richard Barbee, 10, son of I^r. and Mrs. John Barber, Trenton, won out in the elec tions conducted at thee college Thursday afternoon. He defeat ed Yvonne Brown, Yanceyville college student, by a close mar gin, and Glenwood Coopt>r of Nashville. Barber, a junior In Jones High School, has been presi dent of his local 4-H Club for the past six-years. He was com, forestry and gardening cham pion for his country in 1953 and was delegate from Jones County to the Regional 4-H Camp in Washington, D. C., last summer. He is one of nine-children and the family owns a 60 acre farm producing tobacco, com and some truck crops. Other winners in the election of State officers included: Bob by Hardy, Greenville, vice president; Agatha Ricks, Elm City, secretary; Lincoln, Char lotte, treasurer and Evelyn Shaw, Kinston historian. The officers were installed at a brilliant outdoor candlelight service at the closing session on Friday night. Nearly 800-farm youngsters had the time of their lives dur ing the five-day meet which featured an array of prominent speakers, leaders in education, business and agriculture, de monstrations and lectures on the latest trends in farm and home developments and com peted for state championships in a variety of projects sponsored by the North Carolina organi zation. Among the speakers were: W. T. Gibbs, president of the A&T College; Rev. Cleo M. McCoy, director of religious activities at the college; Wayne Corpen- ing, manager, Agricultural De partment of a Winston-Salem banking concern; Dr. Willa B. Player, president of Bennett College; P. H. Stone, assistant to the administrator. Extension Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C.; Dr. W. E. Reed, dean. School of Agriculture, A&T College and Mrs. Minnie Miller Brown, as sistant state home agent who ad dressed the annual banquet. Winners in district elimina tions In several areas of com petition from all over the state competed for state champion ships. Winners in the demonstra tions for boys included: Forage crops (team)—John C. Law rence, Halifax and Herbert Mc Neil, Scotland Neck; Cotton production (team) James W. Mask, III, and Charles H. Chap man, both of Greenville, RFD and electric usage—George Mai- nor and Carl Joyner, both of Magnolia. Legion Draws Bias Ciiarge OlylAHA, Neb. Rev. A. Houston Gordon of Chicago has charged that the American Legion Club denied him lodging last week. He is filing suit and charging the Le gion with violating Nebraska’s civil rights law. D. degree at commence ment exercises celebrating the 80th anniversary of its founding at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee, on Jime 6, 1956. A native of Person County, Dr. Clayton received his pre liminary education in the Per son County Schools and at Mary Potter High School, Oxford. He then entered the Army, seeing fourteen months action over seas with the Quartermaster Corps during the height of the European campaign in World War 11. He completed his pre-medical training at Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, where he received his B. S. in 1948. After his graduation, and prior to en^ tering Meharry, Dr. Clayton taught lor four years in the Person County High School’s Veterans Program and at Hen- derfon Institute, Henderson, N C. He is married to the former Miss Christine Arrington, of Rocky Mount. They are the pa: rents of two daughters. Dawn Maria, age 2 and Cassandra La- veme, two months. At present Dr. Clayton and his family are enjoying a short holiday with his family and friends in Roxboro and Rocky Mount.
