Howard President Hits Jim CroWr
Cdoniaiisin In Dentists' Speech
HAMPTON, Va.
Dr. Mordecai Johnson, presi
dent of Howard University,
blasted segregation and colo
nialism in an aaoreu delivered
to the National Dental Associ
ation at Hampton Institute to
night. He said tbat in the past
sixty years some 1,250,000,000
colored people in the world
have become free or partially
free and tliat Oreat Britain,
France, Spain, Portugal, Ger
many, Holland and other na
tions ttiat fostered colonialism
in Internationa policies are no
longer the great world powers
they once were.
Johnson pointed out that co
lonialism suffered its downfall
because of bitterness and strife
among the colonial nations. He
made it clear that the power of
all these nations combined is
still a poor ttiird to tliat of the
United States and Russia.
The great educator said that
the nations awoke too late to
find that the ^justices render
ed on the colored peoplie of the
world left them incapable of
trusting each other.
In striking a blow against
segregation, Johnson said,
“Those of us who would hold on
to segregation would hold on to
a system which has failed all
over the world. The price of
maintaining segregation in the
United States will be'the loss of
power in the struggle for world
leadership rests in the hands of
tiie colored nations and that
they cannot trust us as long as
we have (Georgias, Misaissippis,
and Virginias. “The only way
we can bring them on our side,”
he said, "is to convince &em
that we are rapidly beginning
to get rid of it.” Dr. Johnson
said his sentiments are similar
to those of Thomas Jefferson
when he said, “When I consider
slavery and remember that my
God is just, I tremble for my
country." The * Inward presi
dent added, "Segregation is the
most tragic dilemma of human
faith in the history of the hu
man raee.”
Music was provided by the
Crusaders IMale Chorus under
the direction of Mr. Charles
Flax. The convention was wel
comed by attorney Jotm D. Gray
of Hampton Institute. Dr. Jolm-
son was introduced by Dr. Rus
sell A. Dixon, dean of the How
ard University Dental Callege.
