Lord and Taylor is one of New York city’s most ex clusive department stores. Mrs. Forte, who is the daugh ter of the late Mrs. Laura Gran dy of Dunbar street in Durham, began working for the New York firm as a stock girl ten years - ago. Currently, she is head of one of the store’s many departments. The Gold Medal Award is an annual citation made by the firm to members of its staff. Miss Alston Fetes Mission Club On Monday, September 10, j Miss Mary Alston entertained members of the B Missionary Circle at her home on Linwood Ave. The devotlonals were con ducted by Mrs, Carrie Saunders, followed by Bible Quotations by all beginning with the letter “A”. President Lillian McKay presided over the business ses sion. After having completed the business deliberations, the hostess took charge by serving a delectable menu. Members present were Mesdames Lucille Starks, Carrie Saunders, Vir ginia Buie, Queen Ester Toon, Mary Hayes, Lillian McKay, Mary Taylor, Hapsy Galloway, Elveta Monroe, Mrs. Mable Po well and Miss Leora Dolson. The group adjourned to meet with Mrs. Mildred Williams on Lawson Street. Rose Teaches At Wayne For First Semester Dr, Alvin W. Roie, professor of sociology at North Carolina CoUega, has been granted one semester’s leave of absence to serve as visiting professor of sociology at Wayne State Uni versity in Detroit, Mich, The NCC sociologist left Raleigh-Durham Airport last week fpr Detroit. He is schedul ed to begin teaching Monday morning, A specialist in social psycho logy and author of numerous ar ticles in this field. Dr, Rose is replacing Wayne’s Dr, Warren Dunham who has been granted a leave of absence. Dr, Dunham is best known for his book on “Mental Disorders in Urban Un rest” Wayne is a state-supported university with some 17,269 stu dents and 586 graduate students, all of whom are predomuiantly white. The school was founded in 1868. Its present head is Dr. Clarence Hlllberry. Dr. Rose, who will teach ad vanced undergraduate and gra duate courses in social psy chology and sociological re search, previously taught in in terracial situations at Brooklyn College in 1949; at St, Louis University in Missouri during the summers of 1951 and 1954 and at Valparaiso University in Indiana in the summer of 1050. The NCC sociologist was noti fied yesterday of the acceptance for publication of his latest arti cle "Social Factors in the Pres tige Hanking of Occupations” in the forthcoming number of “Personnel Journal.” ’ He is also author of chapters on “Institutions’’ and “Educa tional Sociology” in a book now in preparation called “Contem porary Trends in Sociology in or little one- j look first in YELLOW PAGES! N, Harris gave some helpful remarks on voting and stressed the necessity of so do ing. A delectable dinner was served by the gracious hostess.
