McNeill, Mrs. Banetta Peele, and Mrs. Lena Richardson motored to Enfield, Sunday afternoon to attend the Flower Show of the Ever Blooming Garden Club. The Flower Show was very unique and very informing. The Kappa Alpha Si of Dur- tiam and surrounding cities celebrated their uniiual Ciuidc Right program Sunday at St. Joseph's AME Church with Dean Carl A. Fuqua of Kittreli College as guest spealcer. Local Kappas who participated in the program were Dr. J. M. Hub bard, Sr.; Lee Smith; Franli Burnett; Charles Holland and Howard Alston, who gave the History of the Organization. Mrs. Annie Alston, 1410 Fay etteville St., was hostess Sunday afternoon to the Pastor’s Aid Club, one of the church clubs of St. Joseph’s AME Church, of which she is president. Mem bers attending were Mrs. Laura Bailey, Mrs. Laura Burnett, E^- tella Pool, Ella McLaughlin, Mrs. Eva ’Thompson. The club will meet next with Mrs. Laura Burnett, 1208 Fayetteville St. day night at the home of Mrs. Maggie ’Thompson, 8B McDou- gaid Terrace, Durham. After the business session, remarks were given by Mrs. Gei'trude Long and Mrs. Byrd Poole of Durtiam. Baby Contest The Ever-Ready Club of the Orange Grove Baptist Church sponsored a Baby Contest Sun day, April 21, at 3 P.M., with Mrs. Esther Moore as Mistress of Ceremony. The purpose of this contest was raising money toward the building fund of the church. The babies that participated in the contest were as follows: Kotun Rickie Kendall, Vonnie Marie Jones, Freeman Anthony Eatman, Rosalene Hargrove, Stephen Bernard Lee, and An thony Chavis. First prize was given tto Mrs. Elsie Holloway for having ttie largest amount of money; and a second prize was given to Mrs. Roena Barbee. Mrs. Elizabeth Hester of 103S Cornell Street is improving at Duke Hospital. CHAPEL HILL It wai a high day at Holland Chapel last Third Sunday. A Closing Spring Ralley which was directed by the pastor, Rev. S. P. Cook, consisted of a Mock State Convention. Forty-Eight Mr. Mack Lassiter and Mrs. Gatha Lassiter reported the highest amount trom their state and were crowned as Mr. and Mrs. President of the Mock atatfi. Conyention. The quarterly conference business session was held Friday night, April 19, with Elr der J. A. Brown, presiding. Closing on last Third Sunday, April 21, a message was preach ed by Elder J. A. Second Anniversary Union The White Oak and Holland Chapel Church School Union held Its anniversary at White Oak Baptist Church Sunday night, April 21, with the Supt. of both churches in charge. C. The Missionary Circle of Hol land's Chapel met last Thurs- DeShazor's Beauty College celebrated its Twentieth Gradu ation Exercises Sunday, April 28, at 3:00 P.M., at White Rock Baptist Church. "Anchors Aweigh" was the theme for the elaborate Junior- Senior Prom, which was held Friday, April 26, in the Freed man High gymtorium. Through tlie eflorts of the Junior Class, An Aquatic wonderland was created, to the delight of all pre sent. A highlight was a luxury liner—‘‘The S.S. Junior”-which was launched in the center of the gym. A moonlight effect was gained through star-studded paper which draped overhead and the paper of fish and ocean covering the sides produced a nautical atmosphere. Alumni, Parents, and out-of- town guests were present at this exquisite affair which honored the Senior Class of Freedman High. Relreshm^ts were served during Intermission. Music was supplied by Harold Ferguson and his band. The Parent-Teacher Associ ation held Its monthly meeting on Thursday night, April 25, with N. W. Hayes presiding. Election of officers for the ensuing school year was first on the agenda. David Dixon ac cepted the office ol President, which N. W. Hayes relinquished. Other officers chosen were: Vice President, Mrs. WUhe- menia Scott; Secretary, Mrs. J. N. Hickerson; and Treasurer, J. H. Jones. Enlightening reports on a PTA Workshop held in Hickory, were given by the delegates who attended. Speaking eloquently on the subject “The Negro and The Constitution”, Miss Eleanor Hor ton was first place In an IBPOEFW sponsored oratorical contest Tuesday, April 23, at the Smith Memorial Methodist Church. Sccond prize was given to Miss Margaret a. i^atterson wno spoke on the same subject. Miss Peggy Witherspoon captured third prize for her oration on “Tlie Constitution and Citizen ship”, and Miss Jennette Lip- ford who also chose ‘"nie Negro and the Constitution won fourth place. Judges were Miss E. Carson, Principal of West End Elemen tary School, Mrs. Margaret Moore, Registrar of Deeds in Caldwell County; and V. Cor- pening. Principal ol District No. 9 Elementary School. Mrs. Berry was elected dele gate to the State Daughter Elk, Convention at Kinston in May. Mrs. Eugenia Jones was chosen alternate. The 25 Hour Refresher Courses for Licensed Practical Nurses which were held at Lenoir High School were culmi' nated last week, and all partici pants complied with the State requirements. The next meeting ol the Practical Nurses of CaldweU Memorial Hospital will be held Monday, April 29, with Mrs Cecil Holman, presiding. Mrs. Albert Gladman, Den Mother of Cub Scout Den No. 1 of the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church supervised a field trip for her group, Saturday, May 27. The cubs were given an op portunity to investigate works of nature as well as enjoy fish ing and packed lunches. The Daughter Elks held a meeting Thursday, April 25, at Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Felder, Sr., of Dunbar Street, had as their guests during the Easter holidays their children from Rochester, New York, namely- Mr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Young, daughters-Helen and Carol Young, son-Chucky. Allen were happy to have their two daughters home for the Easter holidays, Miss Onnle Allen, a student at North Carolina Col lege at Durham, and Miss LlUle Allen of State Teachers College at Fayetteville. DeShazor Beauty College Holds 20th Graduation The 20th graduation exer cise of the DeShazor Beauty College were held at the White Rock Baptist Church here, Sun day, April 28, at 3:00 P.M. Mrs. J. D. DeShazor is president of the school. The program was presided over by T. R. Speight, and the commencement address was de livered by the Rev. Douglas E. Mooire, pastor of the Asbury Temple Methodist Church. Candidates for graduation were presented by Mrs. S. Marie Bishop Frazier. Candidates for special certificates by C. Phil lips and Mrs. l*lccola Jones, with awarding of diplomas by A. E. Jackson, and awarding of certificates by E. R. York. Fayetteville Sigmas Crown Queen FAYETTEVILLE The local PI Chapter of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity staged an Impressive assembly program Friday, April 26, when they crowned as the Sigma Sweetheart of the Year Rosa Foreman, an attractive junior from Farmville. She was for mally crowned by Miss Edith Walker, a senior Whom Miss Foreman succeeded as the Sig ma Sweetheart. In his introductory remarks James Smith pointed to the ideals upon ^vhich Phi Beta Sigma Is founded-brotherhood scholarship, and service. He re marked that the Fraternity was proud to be a part of the on going business of education to which the college Is dedicated. Vice President James Robinson presided at the affair and Har old Hubbard, President of the local Sigma group, presented the gilts.
