Bethel ANE Zion
Moves Into New
Sanctuary
KANNAPOLIS
Led by the pastor, Rev. W. J.
W. Turner, the officers and
members of Bethel A.M.B. Zion
Church, in a very unique ser
vice here Sunday morning, went
into a new church building,
which was recently completed
at a cost of more than $79,000.
00.
The service began when the
robed senior choir led the pro
cession from the old church to
the new with special music. The
choir was followed by the
ministers, then the officers,
members and friends. The Dr.
L. L. Boyd, Manager of the Pub
lication House, Charlotte, and
Rev. H. H. Little, member of
the faculty. Hood Theological
Seminary, Livingstone College,
Salisbury, assisted Rev. 'Purner
with the services.
The building is a modern
structure of brick with a strik
ing design of church architec
ture. It is located in one of the
new sections of the town. It was
planned to have an extensive
educational program with class
rooms in the basement.
The Rev. Turner told the
audience that the church was
built with a long range program
in view, that called for day-to-
day activities. It can easily have
a nursery program, due to the
fact that its kitchen and dining
room are equipped with suit
able conveni^cea for such a
program. More than 800 persons
were served dinner at the Sun
day services.
The Rev. S. A. Speight, High
Point, together with one ol-his
choirs and a representative
group of members worshipited
with Bethel at 3:00 P.M. and
the night services featured a
song feast with Rev. J. E. Me
Call in charge. The Rev. A. C.
Duffle, Marabl^ AME Zion
Church, could not be present
for the morning service, but
came in at the close and pre
sented a check, from bis church,
in the sum of $100.00. Holy
Week services were held
throughout the week.

Stunt Will Help
Texas Church
GALVESTON, TEX.
A unique stunt will be under
taken in behalf of St. Vincent’s
Episcopal Negro Mission here
by two Princeton University
freshmen. On the weekend of
May 3-5, the students have
scheduled a one hundred-mile
soccer ball dribblethon for
which they expect to collect
$1,000 in pledges for the mis
sion.
The freshmen will dribble
soccer ball from Brown Hall at
Princeton to the Biltmore Ho
tel in New York City; the event
is being sponsored by the St.
Paul’s Society, an organization
of Episcopal students at Prince
ton.
The mission is the first Epis
copal neighborhood or settle
ment house in this area. There
are only two or three in the
entire south, according to the
Rev. Fred Sutton, white vicar
of the Negro congregation.
Lodged in an old grocery store,
the mission staff includes a so
cial worker and a recreational
director.

Service In Talent
Searching Drive
NEW YORK
The establishment of a new
project to assist local communi
ties to discover and develop
their hidden human resources,
was announced yesterday by the
National Scholarship Service
and Fund for Negro Students.
Known as “Community Self-
Service in Talent Searching,”
the project will enable com
munities to help gifted youth
from all culturally, economi
cally, and educationally de
prived groups regardless of
race, creed or sex. It is being
made possible by a three year
grant of $60,000 from the Old
Dominion Foundation.
According to Richard L.
Plaut, executive vice chairman
of NSSFNS, the project repre
sents an important new ap
proach to talent searching
the local level.
“This approach,” Mr. Plaut
declared, "involves digging
down deeper to spot talented
youngsters in their early, for
mative years, and then provid
ing the necessary foUow-Uirough
services to make possible the
maximum development of each
individual.”
