Workshop JACKSON, Miss. Students in the Jaclcson State College Library Workshop re cently had as their guest. Dr. Susan Grey Akers, former dean, of the School of Library Sci ence at the University of North Carolina, Chapel HIU, North Carolina. Dr. Akers, one of the nation’s foremost cataloging au thorities went to the University of North Carolina campus in 1931 as an associate professor of library science. When the School of Library Science was established in 1932 she becama full professor and acting di rector of the School. She wai promoted to director, now dean, a position she held until ttiree years' ago when she retired. Speaking to the workshop group. Dr. Akers emphasized the importance of a -good cata loging job in school libraries. "Remember,” she said, “that the purpose of cataloging is to help students find books.” Con tinuing she said, "Always do the Job in such a way that it will not have to be done over.” Referring to her experiences in Iran, Dr. Akers said that in Iranian libraries the primary object was to preserve the books. "The idea of using books there is something new," she said. "Books are charged out to users through windows in the University, but you can’t carry them home. Conditions in the high schools are worse," she stated. One reason why these conditions exist is that librari ans are personally responsible for library book*. The noted educator stated that there are only 2 attractive libraries in city of more than population. Uc.
