C. Although the Negro popula tion of a sample area under study in Louisiana makes up on ly 30 percent of the total, color ed workers are employed in 60 percent of the jobs at a wire- bound box factory established in the area seven years ago. This is the finding of tnree re- seachers in a coperate study sponsored by Louisiana State U- niversity and the Agricultural, Marketing Service of the U. S.’ Department of Agriculture. The researchers made this finding while trying to deter mine the impact of industrial development on rural levels of living. They point out that this kind of research is needed to help increase the effectiveness of the Rural Development Pro gram. This program is now go ing forward on a demonstration l;)asis in 63 counties and nine 'ti'ade areas in 30 States and Puerto Rico. The hams brought $2,619'.02, or an average of $2.82 a pound, and the eggs, $105, or $20.^0 a dozen. A total of 211 hams and 87 dozen eggs were exhibited. The event was directed by L. R. Johnson, Negro county agent who organized the show and sale in 1948 as a means of encourag ing more farm families to pro duce quality hams and eggs.
