FETES FRIENDS
STEPHEN GOODLOE of Newburg, New York, house
guest of Mrs. Laura Pointer of 1108 Glenn Street, who is
spending his vacation here, entertained over two hundred
friends Sunday afternoon with a barbecue dinner on the
lawn. Hostesses for the occasion were Mrs. Pointer, Mrs.
Essie Gantt, Mrs. Hosea Satterfield and Mrs. Rachel Mack.

GIRL SCOUT LEADERS GET CERTIFICATES
SEVEN NEW GIRL SCOUT LEADERS in District Four
of the Bright Leaf Girl Scout Council received leaders’ certi
ficates Thursday at their “Cook-Out” at Camp Scarborough
following a 16-hour course conducted by District Director
Jessie L. Pearson.
Receiving certificates were: Fannie Quick, Louise Sears;
Mary McDougald, Mattie Whitfield, Beulah Mayes, Minnie
Council and Goldie Herndon.

PUBLISHING SONGS
SISTER MABLE STEWART WOODS, formerly of Dur
ham, is becoming one of our outstanding song writers. She
has written more than twelve selections all of which has been
set to music and will be recorded and published in the near
future. Sister Woods is a member of New Covenant Temple,
New York City. She is active as a Sunday School teacher
and member of the Missionary Department. She is konwn
for her exceptional work in both departments. The J. H.
Johnson A’Capella Choir of New York City has begun re
hearsals on two of her songs in preparation for their fall
recording sessions.
VISITS W^INGTON AND BALTIMORE
MARSHALL REVELS and a group of friends spent the
week-end in Washington and Baltimore. While in Baltimore
he visited his brothers.

Church First Grade and Nursery
School opens its doors on Sept.
3, it will begin its eighth year as
one of Durham's leading pre-

The brain-child of Mrs. Clyde
Scarborough, the Nursery was
organized October 8, j952, under
the supervision of Miss Hattie
M. Jenkins, the first grade and
Nursery School has successfully
operated with a faculty and stafi,
of certified teachers including
Miss Hattie Jenkins; Mesdames
Mildred Amey, Olga Barksdale,
Beulah Hill, Bernice Davenport,
Dorothy Swann, Annabelle
Brown; Dr. W. A. Cleland, Phy
sician, Mrs. E. A. Cordice,
Registered Nurse; and Dr. E. P.
Norris, D.D.S.
A day’s program in the Nur
sery begins at 7:30 A.M. with,
the reception of children and!
consists of health inspection,
fruit juice, supervised play,
stories, conversation, coloring,
clay molding, toys, fingerpaint-1
ing, music, nourishing meals, I
rest, mid-afternoon milk, super-'
vised play and dismissal at
5:00 P.M.
The first grade schedule is
similar to that of the publlo
schools. It is supervised by the
State Board of Public Instruc
tion.
According to Dr. Melvin C.
Swann, minister-supervisor, a
large enrollment is expected for
this year’s session.

lingerie shower, Saturday, Aug.
9, at the home of Mrs. Norma

Upon her arrival, Miss Bates
was presented a beautiful cor
sage of white carnations. The
gift table decorations included
a white and pink umbrella and
statuettes of a bride and groom.

MALE CHORUS ANNIVERSARY
THE MALE CHORUS of Russell Memorial Church cele-
bi'ated its second anniversary Sunday evening, July 26 with
a program at the church. The chorus is under the direction
of Alonzo Eubanks with Albertis Wingate as president. Mrs.
Cora Burchette served as mistress of ceremonies for the oc
casion. Other participants on the program were Reverend
C. L. White and Reverend Mrs. Faucette.
VACATIONING IN CANADA
MRS. MERMA W. DUNNIGAN and Mrs. Teresa S.
Carroll are vacationing in Port Huron, Michigan and parts of
Canada. While in Port Huron, Mrs. Dunnigan and’ Mrs.
Carroll will be guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sowell. Before
returning to Durhani, they will also visit relatives in Char
leston, West Virginia. •
