Vegetsbles
Consumers will find more va
riety at the vegctaljle countcr and
lower prices this week. For thrifty
buys select potatoes, carrots, cab-
bafie, lettuce, and celery.
Unfavorable weather conditions
have caused peppers and cucum-
bcrs to rc:nain on the high pricc.
list. More vine-ripened tomatoes
are being offered at lower prices.
Asparagus is increasing in supply.
Broccoli and cauliflower are both
good fresh items.
Potatoes are most economical
for meal planning. Green bean
quality and supply is improving
weekly.
Fruits
Pink fleshed grapefruit offers
the mosl^ in the citrus fruit line.
jOranges are somewhat higher in
price as supplies decrease.

Jones Notes
AMEZ Progress,
In S. America
Bishop 11. L. Jones, who iteaded

ivork of the' A. M. E. Zion Church
n the Virgin Islands and South
\merica, upon arrival here last
vcek, said that considerable prog-
•css is being made.
He reported tiiat a new cliurcii

ir of Bishop 11. D. Medford. Bishop
.ledford played an important role
a establishing of tiie denomina-
ion in tiie area.
A new church was also dedi-
ated at Georgetown, British Gui-
na, S. A. Tiiis one was named
for the late Bishop C. C. Alleyne,
v'ho helped to expand the denomi-
laytion there.
His Worship, Mayor Durham,

relate, handed the government

dred persons. "The Lord's Pray

ten heard “The Heavens Are Tell
ing” from Haydn’s “The Creation”
completed the first group of num
bers. j
"Hock All My Soul," always aj
favorite, received a spirited pcr-
t'ormance by the male chorus. 'I'he
highiiglit of the first half of the
program was tiic unveiiing of a
beautiful and promising soprano
voice singing tlic solo sections in i
“I’raise Ye tlie Lord” (150th i
I’salm). by' Kondagger. (The so-|
>rano’s name, unfortunately,- was
uit listed on tlie program under
his particular number.) Tiiis

.arving a successful future in mu-
iic.
The famous Uingwald arrange ,
nent of “The*Battle Hymn of The;
lepublie” with accompanimcnt j
.cored for piano duo and organ j
'jrought the first hall of the pro-
;ram to a resounding close. This
■eporter could not help wishing
lhat the organ had had a few more |
iynamie solo stops. They would

pressive number.
Dubois’ “The Seven Last Words
of Christ” with its solo, duct, and
.rio passages - representing the
narrator and dominant figures of
ihe passion, and the choruscs -
representing the swaying senti
ments of the populace, as de
scribed in the scriptures, was per
formed after intermission. In the
sections where the ensemble lack
ed polish, the fervor and musician
ship of the group more than am
ply compensated. This ’far from
easy/ work poees special prob
lems for a college group.' Due to
the Good Friday text, the com
position can receive only a few^
limited performances in any one
year. Unlike some of the almost
never changing memberships in
church-connected choirs, an extra
curricular musical group at a col
lege is always plagued by a rapid
turn-over of members. TJie, Dubois
work mellows with age in a choir’s
repertory.
The very able and talented di
rector of the ciioir is John W.
Hunter who received his training
in South Carolina, at Howard Uni
versity, and witi) several famons
New York choirs, llie accom
plished accompanist, at home both
at tlie organ and piano, is Mildred
Strider, a product of Howard and
Julliard .
Tile thirty-five member touring
group is only a part of the eighty
voice choir. Un this trip most of
them are juniors, with a sprink
ling of seniors and sophomores . .
Many of (he seniors could nut
■nake the trip due to practice-
leaching commitments. In fact a
senior in the small aUo section
.lad traveled all night (during the
previous 24-hour period) on local
bu.sses to arrive at the Columbia
campus just minutes before the
jhoir departed. It was also learned
hat the members of the conccrt
.'hoir must maintain an over-all
iwo pcint (B ) scholastic average.
The audiencc’s delight In the
,)erformance was perhaps best ex
pressed by one of the parishioners,
ihe-had gone to hear some “nice'
'nt/sic.'^e'Ticard 'good* musie —
)eautifully performed.
