NEW YORK — Male imperson
ators are making a lot of money
these days and if we’re to go by
the rousing welcome at the Apollo
Theatre,, we’d say we understand
where all the enthusiasm comes
from . . The audiences seems to
really go for the men acting as
girle* in a girlie show . . even gt>-
ing as far as stripping in comedy
bits which put the audience into
■creams. . . Making their second
appcarance within a year — the
Jewel Box Revue, which leatures
25 boj’8 and just 1 girl, i» billed
as “astounding deception" ior you
cannot tell just who the 2!» boys
are and just which one is the real
girl . . The impersonators have
been doing well — for they fust
left a long run at the elite Town
and Country Club in Brooklyn —
and are now ready for greater
placcs—namely a tour to Europe
where they appreciate such things
far belter than Americans . . .
We»ring gorgeous gown*, with *11
the mannerisms just as any girl,
the boys have done well to make
their revu^ into a theatre act
whk;h has so far passed the ap
proval of the censor board o. k. . .

Hollywood really made a stride
forward when they let pretty l^ah-
ann Carroll take the lead in the
Peter Gunn series and did she do
it justice! . . wow! . , Ulahann is
a lovely girl and a beautiful singer
... to top it all: she made a good
actress and seemed ‘just made for
the role’ of a mystery woman . .
James Edwards, always a good
actor, had a role without much
imagination as the husband look-,
ing for his wife to kill her — and
had no words at the ending when
it counted — but he carried it off
well . . . Sure great credit goes
to the producers and sponsors for
the molding of tlie story and ac
tors together to make one fine
performance . . . and giving the
public tne type of entertainment
it wants — good plays and good
players, regardless of their color. .
ODETTA AGAIN
Ernie Ford had Odeita on his
TV show — she’s the plain but
talented girl who did the sensatloh-
al duets with Harry Belafonte and
the country never got finished
praishig her . . . She did just as
well on Ford’« program — singing
spirituals, etc. and haj learnet{
much poise since her American de
but. . .
Count Basie seems to love
Europe — he’s going to London
for a date at the Bradford Gau-
Ifibnt arid”6lB W the "London
dium on the 15th of April . . Lena
Horne for the Eden Roc in Miami
Beach this week . . . Sammy Davis
Jr. for Chez Paree in Chicago April
17th . . Billy Eckstine for Roberts
Show Lounge — also in the windy
city. . .

KITT—STILL DIFFERENT
Eartha Kitt is certainly sticking
to her theme of being different. . .
She made her opening at the Latin
Quarter on Broadway wearing a
leopard fur dress and evening coat
which spelled mocla no matter
how she turned . . She sang a var
iety of songs, namely ‘Evil.’ “Mack

It might not be fait, but a

Ih any case, she is usually
doing a great ia/uscice to her
personal and public life.
Too many women who don’t,
dress well complain that they
don’t have enou|^ money for
good or smart clothes. They
honestly believe that a lot of
money is the key to Ijeiog well-
dressed. True, a lady with un-
liaiited means can go to the
best stores and put herself
into the hands of fashion ex
peits.' But there is no longer
any reason why a woman with
a slim budget can’t compete
on die fashion scene with her
well-to-do sisters.
The answer is in home sew
ing. Dressmaking does not re
quire unusual talents. It is
like • game and can be great
fun. Long experience by the
sewing experts of McCall’s
Patterns, for instance, has
led to amazingly easy sew-
ing. Up-to-die-minute guides
and directions in these pat
terns are explained so dearly
that even a child can follow
many of them.
Both of the patterns pic
tured here are simple to make.
Botb can be made at far less
than they would c;ost in a
store. Tlie plaid dress (Mc
Call’s Pattern No. 50S7) has
a soft, eight-gore, doubly box
pleated skirt. The scoop neck
has a detachable collar with
a bow. A cummerbund may be
worn instead of the narrow
self-belt. This dress is made
of a maroon and gray plaid,
