ON PANEL DISCUSSION
The Rev. J. R. Manley, pastor
of the First Baptist Church, was
one of the Panel members who dis
cussed “Desegregation in Chapel
Hill” over the local Radio Station
last Wednesday night. Others on
the panel were Dr. Daniel Pollitt,
Dr. Robert Seymour, Richard
Jamerson, Rev. Charles Hubbard
and James Wadsworth. Some of
the topics discussed were Desegre
gation of Schools, Theaters, Eating
Places, and the hijih birth rate of
children born out of wedlock.
Y-TEENS MEETING
The Y-Teens heid their regular
meeting Sunday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. Thomasine Regester
on S. Graham St. The important
part of the meeting dealt ‘ with
the selection of five members to
attend the Neighborhood ¥'Te6n
Conference to be held in Durham,
March 18th. Thosa selected by
popular vote to attend were: Jackff
tldwr-rds, President, Donna Jo Old
ham, Secretary^/ Sandra Gattis,
Gwendolyn itanis and Carolyn
Briggs. After the business meet
ing a delicious repast was served
by the hostess. About 21 girls at

number since it was organized

MASS MEETING
On Friday night of last week
the Citizen’s Committee for Open
Theatres held a mass meeting at
the St. Joseph’s Methodist Church,
The report of the executive sub
committee read by the Rev. Chas.
Jones, stated that negotiations
held Thursday afternoon with E.
C. Smith, manager of the Caro
lina Theatre and Andy - Gutierrez,
manager of the Varsity Theatre,
were unsuccessful.
■ He added, however, that due to
a “marked difference in attitude”
toward the committee's eYforts,
picketing of the Varsity would be
suspended next Tuesday,
Gutierrez, the report noted, has
been friendly to the pickets—even
to the extent of offering one of
thm an umbrella during a shower.
A few objections were raised from
the floor concerning the decision
to suspend picketing the Varsity.
However, the group of 15 went on

theatres.
It was reported that a poll be
ing taken among students reveals
that 87 per cent of the 1800 inter
viewed "have expressed favorable
opinions toward integration or
will go along with it.” A report
was delivered on obtaining sign
atures from 350 fatuity members
favoring integration of the the
atres, -and mention was m?de of
church petitions to the same ef
fects.
Daniel Whitley, a Lincoln High
Schol student was added to the
executive committee. Dr. Richard
P. Calhoun, a U. N. C. professor
was elected to the committee to
replace another U. N. C. professor,
David Davies who had to resign
on account of a personal reason.
Other members of the committee
are: Mary Mason, Chairman, Henry
Edwards, Peggy Hogan, Joseph
Petliford, David Dansby, John
Brent, Braxton Foushee, and the
Revs. Charles Jones and W. R.
Foushee. '
