For more than 40 years Rut ledge has been general manager or Rutleilgc and Bigham Mortu ary, 605 S. Center Street. The history of this business firm is fled in closely wiih the history of Statesville and Iredell Coun ty. No one has ever been turned away who sought the aervices offered by Rutledge and Bigham. In 1951, upon graduation from Eckels School of Embalming, Gadson Bigham Jr. joined the firm where he remained until his death in December 1961. Rutledge, 74. was born in Georgetown, South Carolina on January 1. 1889, the son of Primus and Isabel Grant Rut ledge. At an early age .he moved with his parents to Charleston, South Carolina where he lived until early manhood. During the years spent in Washington, D. C., he studied embalming at t#lgh*i while woriting for a member of Congress during the day. His professional work was his greatest joy; however he found time to serve in other capacities whenever possible. As a result he served for many years as messenger for Judge E. Yates Webb of the Federal Court. Due to ill health, Rutledge has not been active in - the perfor mance of his duties for a num ber of years. Nevertheless, his interest in his business never lagged, and with the assistance of his widow and Mrs. Bigham he was able to keep in touch with .his work until the end. Funeral services were con ducted at th;e home. Interment in Belmont Cemetery. He leaves to meurn their loss his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Crawford of Charlotte and Mrs. Richardene Bethea of New York City; five grand children, six great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends The monthly meettafi «f th* lit.
