Bayard Rustin, lmJew In a Delicate Situation
A leading figure in the Negro
dvjl "tlghty movement has warned

situation" because of
mojiMfay Negro frustration in the
fOr racial
Bayard Rustin, organizer of the
IBdp March on Washington, made
the statement at a forum on Nc
groJjhrish relations sponsored by
the Cojiferei]£e on Jewish Social
Studies. Proceedings of the con
ferfnfe appeared in the latest is
sue ft Jewish Social Studies, a
quarterly journal devoted to con
temporary and historical aspects
of Jewish life.
ll> his conference paper, Rustin
said Negroes were "tired, de.sper-1

Hamptons James Pavno held
thfe Aggies to two hits, both sin

gress in ending racial segregation.
"In such a situation oT desper
ation,'' he said, ".. .they will at
tack violently. They -Aill also at-
Tack Negroes with whom they ,do
not feel tbey have empathy." He
continued:
"When Jews think they are be
ing singled out, that every little
incident that occurs must be in
terpreted as sonic' rise of Hitler
ism. they understand neither the
nature nor the complexity of the
problem."
Rustin noted that strong criti
cism had been voiced by Negroes
even against such civil rights lead
rs as Roy Wilkins, James Farmer
and the Rev. Martin Luther King,
Jr. "This is the way men behave
when they are desperate," he de
clared, adding:
"It is most likely that they will
next jump on Jews, who histor
'cally have been friendly to them.
"He does not understand this,
loes not understand the. psychol
ogy of people in motion."
Another conthibutor to the dis
cussion—Abraham G. Duker,- an
fditor of the journal and profes
sor of history at Yeshiva Univer
sity—said that "demands for 'Neg
■'roizaticn' of Harlem stores are
viewed by some Jews »s too sim
ilar to 'Aryanization' propaganda
of Germany."
Dr. Dufcer etoarged that "qiort
and greater demands are beinj
jpade by Negro leadership on thf
J**isb community than on the-
Christajn denominations which
surely should be closer to the Ne
gpps because of their adherence
to the same religious faith."
He called for "a frank and hon
e? t Nggro-Jewish dialogue" but
warned that this could not be
achieved "unless some Jewish
spokesmen free themsleves of
their masochistic approach tr
their own people and Negro lead
ers begin to react to black racisr
as they would like to see whiti
persons rpact to white racism.
I "Regrettably," he added, "anti
Semitic and genocidal Negro ex
tremists have been given respecta
bility and recognition as leaders
by legitimate Negro leaders and
intellectuals.
"This is what appened to anti-
Semites in Ge r many, and the
worjd is still paying for it.''
Other participants in the dis
eussion vhose papers were pub
