early this year in the free distri
bution of a pamphlet "How You
Can Become a Nurse," produced
with the co-operation of Harlem
Hospital in New York. The book
let dramatizes in a picture story
the steps leading to a career as a
registered nurse, including ad
mission requirements sof nursing
schools. It also points up the avail
ability of Government loans for
tuition fees.
Distribution of the pamphlet was
followed by published and broad
east appeals for student nurses in
newspapers serving the nation's
Negro communities and fifty-eight
Negro-oriented radio stations, serv
ing twenty states in the East,
Midwest, South and Southwest.
The public-service announcements
urge high-school girls to send for
the booklet. In many cases, taped
announcements are broadcast by
registered nurses.
To follow through on the radio
appeals, a career workshop hag
been scheduled at Harlem Hospi
pital to .vhich girls in the New
York area who have requested the
pamphlet are invited. A panel of
physicians, nurses and recruit
ment officials will answer ques
tions about the nursing profession.
A transscript of the session will
be supplied to press and radio
outlets.
In addition to the individual re
quests for the pamphlet, distribu
tion was made to such centers *9
the Government-operated Freed
men's Hospital School of Nursing
in Washington, IX C., high school*
and leading nursing schools.
Free eopies of the booklet may
be obtained by writing to Ex-Lax
Inc., 423 Atlantic Avenue, Brook
lyn, New York.

Urban League Views the Racial
Situation With Extreme Cauticn
Is the nation in for another
"long hot summer,"
In the opinion of nine Urban
Leagup directors from one typi
cal state, Ohio, the mood of
some 800,000 Negroes concentra
ted in the ghettos of their cities
is brtter than it was last summer.
Their life ix better, too —but, gains
vary from'm idfst to small.
Interviewed in Dayton, where
they concluded a two-day anti-pov-.
erty workshop recently in the!
Sheraton Hotel, the directors said
that, for the first time, their peo
ple had hope for a better life.
Their fears, however , are two
fold.
First, that white citizens might
mistake the absence of explosive
riots of peaceful protests for an
indication that "all's well when
it isn't.
Second, that explosions in Birm
ingham or Harlem might trigger
."chain reaction", disorders in
Oh' >'a street*.
' "Our hope is tempered by skep
ticism," said James Ethridge, the
[League's housing director in Col
umbus. "We're still not sure of
the white man's commitments."
Although he praised a nccom
mittee made up of businessmen
fir opening jobs at all levels, and
'city officials for hiring Negro you
ths in summer posts ( he said,
"There's been no improvement
whatever in housing. And that's
» sore spot."
In Dayton, says director Char
les W. Washington, "Tilings are
so damn quite it worries nie" He
said Negroes are taking hope
from the involvement of church
groups but are upset over the lack
of a State fair housing law.
"We want good homes," he said,
f'just like everybody else,"
Says Cleveland's director Ernest
C. Cooper, "The mood here is one
of watchful waiting. We've got a
breathing spell. The city's bought
a little time."
The lake city's 280.000 Negroes
don't "expect miracles," he re
ports" but they do insist on sin
cere action bv whites."
J Evidence of this has been the
opening by major firms of a Job
Center where Negro College grad
uates are being interviewed, and
increased discussions between the
"power structure" and the rights
leaders.
, The edge of the Negro's anger
over slums and continued high un
employment has been dulled by

In Director Vernon L

taking some progress in jobs for
fundamental change. Well it isn't."
Doth Od-nm and Warren's Dir
ector W. a. Smalls are concerned
over police attitudes. "We've got

"People feal - brutality and inept

Smalls—who last summer feared
violence if police used dogs to
quell possible disorders—said that
idea has been tossed out "and the
whole climate has changed for the
better."
Odoni's League shortly expects
to receive an $86,000 grant irom
Washington to tutor disadvantaged
youngsters. "But how can we
teach them good citizenship when

In Maamllon, says League Dir

dissatisfaction and it's no t heal

employment, restriction in hous
ing, and 'benevolence' and discri
mination in the public schools."
,Wilso n says, "The Number One
issue here is 'token hiring' by the
banks and department store
merchants on Lincoln Way," A
close second, he repoits, is the
anger engendered by high school
counselors who point Negro pup
ils toward menial jobs and reports
of bias by school teachers. "I don

is that white leaders won't take
action In time."

In Canton and Springfield, Lea
gue Directors Clarence Thomas
and Horace W. Morris report wide
spread grumbling over housing
bias.
"The white community still has
its finders around the Negro's
throat," Morris says "One healthy
sign is that Negroes are not going
to take it lying down.
They're rousing up, waking up
and becoming more aggresive."
—This trend, he reports, i.s more
likely to lead to a stronger civil
rights movement than to riots.
Some 29 percent of all Springfield
Negro families enjoy incomes
over $6,000 a year, "But they're
suffocated in efforts: 'o live like de

Morris, now angling for a SIOO,

he contends. "Whites and Negroe.,
