God dard this week said that physi cians must become convinced of the seriousness of common measles, and he urged the rou tine vaccination of children against the disease. Dr. Goddard, who is also di rector of the U. S. Public Health Service Communicable Disease Center in Atlanta, Ga., made these statements in an interview discussing a recent survey which revealed physici an indifference to vaccination against common measles." The survey, reported in Mod ern Medicine, showed that of 400 private practioners ques tioned about half did not con sider common measles serious enough to warrant routine im munization. Further, a large number of the interviewees felt that children should con tract the disease in order to develop natural immunity. "Physicians must be equally convinced of this and must reflect such conviction in their relationships with pa tients," he emphasized. An advocate of common measles eradication through mass immunization. Dr. God dard added: "I strongly urge the routine use of measles vac cine in pediatric practice and in the practice of all physici ans who see Children." Common measles is today the most serious infectious disease of childhood. It causes hun dreds of deaths annually in the United States, and many more abroad. Furthermore, its com plications such as encephalitis can cause lifelong damage to children who survive. Eradication of the disease has become possible with the advent of effective live measles vaccines. The first of these, called Rubeovax, was intro duced for medical use In 1963. To reduce its bothersome measles-like s reactions, it has been routinely given with an accompanying injection of gam ma globulin. Last February another vac cine, called Lirugen, was intro duced. It is a further attenuat ed live-virus vaccine which re quires only a single injection, and no gamma globulin. It is also know as the Schwarz-strain vaccine after its developer Dr. Anton J. F. Schwan, formerly head of virus research for the Pitman-Moore Division of The Dow Chemical Company and now Director of Dow Human Health Products. TRUEVINE JR.
