Solice has been appointed as a supervisor of elementary education in the Durham City Schools. She succeeds Mrs. Zelma Daniels in office. A graduate of Hillside High School, Mrs. Solice received her bachelor's and master's degree from North Carolina College here. She has done post grad uate work in some of the lead ing universities in the coun try. The University of Michi gan, Temple University, the University of North Carolina and Duke University. After teaching in Durham County Schools for 11 years, she was named as general su pervisor for the Granville County Schools system in Ox ford. She served in that posi tion 16 years. Dixon's Line-Up By JOHN DIXON ANNUAL YOUTH FELLOW SHIP DAY HELD The annual Youth Fellowship Day of the Durham District of the A. M. E. Zion Church con vened in Siler City August 21. The beginning of the fellow ship began with the roll call and registration. Devotion fol lowed with the Durham Dis- I trict Christian Youth Council i in charge. Remarks later fol lowed by the District Directress, Mrs. V. B. Pitchford. The event which highlighted : the day was a panel discussion by the District officers. The j first topic: Youth's Responsi bilities to the Total Program of the Church was taken by John Dixon, President of the, Durham District, the second I topics; Attitudes and Applica- j tion was taken by Cynthia Me bane, the Secretary of the Dis- j trict. Youth Vocations in the Local Church was taken by [ Gaynelle Cook, the Assistant Secretary and Where to Look j and to Whom to Look for Guid-1 ance was taken by Rufus Hor ton substituting for his sister,. Euphalia Horton. A question j and answer period followed. Presentations and awards were next. Miss Marvina Har ris received an award for being the second place winner in the oratorical contestm the Jun icr High Department. The Doon Toon Memorial Award went to the person having (he largest amount of children attending j this fellowship. The Youth Fel-1 lowship Avard went to SI. Mark Church for having the largest number of Youths attending ' this fellowship. A film was shown concerning alcohol and how it affects the human body. After which a singspiration took place with Wendell Holman and his moth-1 er, Mrs. C. J. Holman in charge. The Rev. G. Ray Coleman was . the guest speaker for the eve-1 ning. He was introduced by the Rev. J. A. Brown, the Presiding Elder of the Durham District. The offering was taken by Clif- | ton Horton, James Da'vson, and John Dixon. Remarks later fol lowed by Rev. Brown. Final event of the day was a free period with Wendell Hol man in charge. All types of | games took place such as soft i ball, croquette and many oth ers. Parrish St., Durham, N. C. system in the county schools has become an important part of the county school program. The system is set up so that each student taking physical education receives at least 30 minutes of physical improve ment a day. | At the beginning of the i school year each person taking physical education is required to take the North Carolina Phy sical Fitness Test. This test consists of five different exer i cises, each of which is design ed to test a certain part of the ! body. The student receives a grade on this test and from this grade the teacher can dis cover the individual weaknesses i of the student. The remainder I of the semester is spent in try j ing to improve the weak areas of the student. Then in the I spring the same test is taken j again, and the scores on this second test are usually higher than the scores of the previous j test. Although work is continued r.n these exercises, there is [ also a program of general ath ! letics which is carried on dur ; ins 'he school year. In the fall the students participate in , touch football and soccer. Dur ing the winter basketball, tumb | ling, and volley ball are played. ! and in the spring the students 1 have sofetball and track in ; their physical education classes.
