ITVLV. ... • -> ■ r ■ - ■ FSC Awarded $83,830 by U.S. Office of Education for Instifufe FAYETTEVILLR -L Fayet te\ylle State College has been awarded approximately 883,- 830 by the United States jtmice of Education to conduct a Summer Institute for Advanced Study in English for Elemen tary teachers,,, it was announc ed by President Rudolph Jones. Supported under the Nation al Defense Education Act, Title XI, the Institute will offer courses in Grammar and Com position, Children's Literature and the Teaching of Reading for a period of seven weeks from June 13 to July 29. Op tional credit of six semester hours will be given to those participants who request it upon successful completion of the courses of instruction. The Institute will be limited to sixty participants selected by a screening committee. Par ticipants will be drawn largely from North and South Carolina and Virginia, though a small number of participants from other areas may be accepted. Each participant will receive a stipend of $75 per week for the period of attendance, and each individual with one or more dependents will receive an additional stipend at the rate of sls per •week for each dependent. Fayetteville State College will waive tuition and course fees but participants are expected to purchase copies of required textbooks and to pay their o\yn tra\el expenses. In stitute members will be delect ed from teachers who: (1) are currently teaching the language arts in grades 1- 6 of public or nbn-public ele mentary or union schools; (2) have at least five years of teaching experience and who anticipate at least ten years of teaching service be fore retirement; (3) hold the B.A. or B S. de gree from an accredited col lege or university and (4) who have not previously attended an NDEA Institute.
