ANNUAL MEETING OF TUBMAN YWCA TO BE HELD THURS., JAN. 13 "Program Comes Alive" will be the theme of the 44th an nual meeting of Tubman Branch YWCA in the recrea tion room of the main build ing on Umstead Street, Thurs day, January 13, at 7:00 p.m. There will be a buffet jdiji ner at 7:00 p.m. for which reservations may be made by calling the "Y." A program SAINT JAMES TO HOST DURHAM USHERS PROGRAM SUNDAY EVE The Durham Interdenomina tional Ushers Union will hold its regular monthly program James Baptist) Church begin ning at 3:15 p.m. The theme for the program is "Striving Towards Greater Growth." Clyde Moore, Jr., president of the Durham Ushers, will de liver the address. He will be introduced by Mrs. Hastie Price of the Lincoln Memorial Baptist Church. Tompkins-Goldsby Exchange Nupital Vows In a double ring ceremony held at the Gethsemane Bap list Church Sunday afternoon, December 19, Gertrude Tom pkins became the bride of Sgt. Kirby Goldsby, Jr. Rev. V. E. Brown officiated over the cere monies. Miss Tompkins is the daugh er of Mr. and Mrs. Tompkins of 105 East Enterprise Street of Durham. Sgt. Kirby's parents centered around the theme will follow the dinner. Activi ties of the different depart ments of the "Y" including Pre-teens, Y-Teens and Adults will be depicted through re ports and skits. A special fea ture will Jbe the appearance on the program of Mrs. McMurry Richey, coordinator of Day Care, Operation Breakthrough. Mrs. Henreitta Kinnell will sing a solo. Rev. W. T. Ratliff, pastor of the host.church, will give remarks at the conclusion of the program. scripture will be read by Mrs. Belvin O. Mitchell and the invocation will be given by L. G. .Frazier. Burch Coley, chairman of the Union, will serve as master of ceremonies. Mrs .Delois Johnson will inter pret a special reading. Mrs. Viola Brodie will give the an nouncements and Louis Jones and Louis Laster will lift the offering. Subscription Rates: $5.15 are Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Golds by, Sr. of Denver, Colorda. The bride was given in mar riage by her father. She wore a whitn long sleeve satin gown and carried a Bible covered with orchids. The bridegroom was attired in his Armed Forces uniform. SMITH ARE GUESTS Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Smitft and daughter Pamela Elizabeth were house guests of Mrs. Alice Hardy of Carroll Street, during the Christmas holidays. Dr. Smith, formerly director of Libraries and Pro fessor of Psychology at North Carolina College, is now em ployed at Morgan State Col lege as Professor in the Grad uate Education Department. Mrs. Smith is teaching first grade in the City of Balti more. Airborne now stationed at Ft. Bragg. The meeting was held at Mrs. Weaver's home on Brant Street. A program ~ of Christmas music and poems were enjoyed by all. Those present were served egg nog, cake, nuts and candies, after which each per son received a gift. TJie meet ing was adjourned until the first Sunday in January. GIRL WINS STATE STATE AWARD Miss Geraldine Moo re, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Moore of Hurdle Mills, was named North Carolina's Most Representative Grange Girls at the State Grange Winter Youth Conferene held in Winston- Salem this week. • The title was awarded on the basis of activities in the Grange community, school and church She will represent N. C. at the National Grange Con vention iti Minneapolis, Minn., in November. THE U. N. STUDY GROUP " HAS MEETING The United Nations study group met at the YWCA on Friday, January 6, at 10:00 a. m. The speakers for the meet ing were Dr. and Mrs. A 1 Whanger. The topic for discus sion was "Rhodesia." SISTERHOOD HOLDS MEETING WED. NIGHT The Beth El Sisterhood met at the YWCA on Friday, Jan uary 4, at Beth El Club House. Guest speaker was Dr. Le nore Behar. The topic of her lecture was "Adjustments Children Have to Make to Suc ceed in School." Following group singing of "Silent Night," introductory I remarks were given by E. T. Artis of Durham. Mrs. Sylvania A. Harmon of Philadelphia in troduced members of the fam ily and gave a brief history of the club. Presentation of Dur ham guests was made by Earl T. Artis with greetings, on be haft of the West Durham Bap tist Church, by being brought by Rev. F. D. Terry, pastor. After the dinner the club and guests were led in the singing of Christmas carols by Julian Artis, deacon of Jeho vah, Jireth Baptist Church of Philadelphia. A social hour followed. The'benediction was pronounced by Rev. Terry. lina; Mrs. Charlie Gregory of Greensboro and David Massey of Mebane. Mr. and Mrs. Massey have 18 grandchildren andv nine great grandchildren. Greeting guests was Mrs. Ber nis Massey and receiving gifts was Gary Graves. Mrs. Tom Allen poured punch assisted by Mrs. James Foster and Miss Laura Home. Keeping the guest book was Mrs. Judith Seagraves of Siler City. Bid ding guests good-bye was Mrs. Emily Harrison of Winston- Salem. DECORATIONS TOPIC OF GARDEN CLUB The Green Hill Garden Club met Monday with Mrs. R. D. Kinball. Special guests were Mrs. W. R. Dennis, Miss Carol Elliott and Miss Gerri Burn ette. AMERICAN LEGION UNIT 6 AUXILIARY MEETS AT CLUBHOUSE The regular monthly meet ing of Unit 6 American Legion Auxiliary was held at thte Le gion Clubhouse on Tuesday night, January 4. Emphasis this month was on legislature and national secu rity. Pins were distributed for members to wear as evidence of support of U. S. Armed Forces in Viet Nam.
