C. A. Samples, who was disquali fied as a candidate for repre sentative f'om the 134 th Dis trict to the General Assembly of Georgia, Issued a militant statement at a press conference held at the Georgia State Capi tol Building. Miss Page. whose future plans include becoming a col lege professor of history, is a 1963 honor graduate of Hill side High School and a rising Senior at North Carolina Col lege where she majors in hiv | tory and minors in English. 99 Scholarships Given Negroes In Med Schools Ninety-nine grants to Negro students who will attend medi cal school in 1966-67 were an nounced recenly by Dr. Frank lin C. McLean, Secretary-Treas urer and Founder of National Medical Fellowships, Inc., and Visiting Professor, Department of Histology, University of Illi nois. This is the largest num ber of awards made by Nation al Medical Fellowships, Inc. in its 20 year history. The winers of the 1966-67 scholarships and grants-in-aid will study at 51 U. S. medical schools, includ ing 14 Southern medical schools. Commenting on this year's program, Dr. McLean said, "With this year's admisston of Negroes into the Medical Col lege of Alabama, Louisiana State University, and Vander bilt University, all but one or t%vo of the Southern medical schools have now opened their doors to Negro students. It is no longer a problem for the i qualified Negro to find a medi i ca lschool but rather for the medical students are mmabbm i fied Negro students. At pres j ent only about 3 per cent of ; all medical students are Negro. I All of our efforts are bent on | seeking ways to increase this I number." Ten of the awards are the I prized four-year National Medi cal-Sloan Foundartion Scholar ships, made to outstanding Ne gro students entering medical school. Beginning in Septem ber, 1966, these students will study at Columbia University, The Johns Hopkins University, Loma Linda University, Louisi ana State University, New Jersey College of Medicine, Norhwestern University, Ohio State University, Univeraity of Pittsburgh, Stanford University and Vanderbilt Univeraity. versity. From the latter insti tution he was awarded the Master of Education degree in school administration, Septem ber 1, 1965. He was elected tc the office of "Historian" of the Alpha Tau Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, honorary society in education, for the 1966-67 school year. Allen was awarded a two year Southern Education Foun- I dation fellowship to pursue a doctor's degree in school ad ministration at Duke. He re signed his teaching position at Hillside to meet the S E F's ■ requirement that all fellow ship recipients must become full-time students John H Lu cas. Principal of Hillside High School named him the Out standing Young Educator at Hillside for the 1965-66 school year He is a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and has served as teacher and Assistant Su perintendent in the Sunday School Allen is married to the former Miss Constance V. Glenn of Spartanburg. South Caro lina and they have one child— Jennifer Lauren. Tie Men's Day Program was climaxed with panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. J. T Tucker, mem ber of the Trustee Board, served as mdderator for the panel The topic discussed was "Is God Dead''" Panelists were Deacon Levi Mitchell, Supt. of the Sunday School, B. B. Rog ers, Financial Secretary, and j Deacon Hezeklih Ruffin, Di rector of the B. T. U. Dr. Alexander D. Moseley, pastor, acclaimed the Men's Day j Program as highly successful.
