The Aero Commander Divi sion of Rockwell Standard Corp., which builds the twin-engine business jet at its Bethany, Okla. plant, supplied the executive craft to demonstrate to the offi cials of Canada and New York the speed, comfort and roominess of today's business jets. The six passengers and two pilots made the quick trip of more than 500 miles in less than an hour in ex tremely bad weather. Pilot Ted Hurst took off in rain and wind and was soon on top of the cloud layer and cruising in the blue at approximately 24,000 feet. Conditions were still unpleas ant when the group arrived back in New York that night but the plane again demonstrated the ease and practicality of private jet aircraft operating today in all weather conditions. "Many thanks for a thoroughly delightful trip," Palmer wrote Aero Commander upon his re turn. "I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the Jet Commander . . . what a way to travel." Capers, attorney of Cleve land, Ohio: in the education Garden Time A good many requests have been received for infor mation about fruit trees which require less space than standard sorts. Fortunately, we a rather good collection of varieties grafted on dwarfing rootstocks which are very desirable for planting around the hoihe where space is a problem. First the apples: Varieties are available on Mailing no. 9 rootstock. This is the most dwarfing type, the trees reaching a height of from 6 to 10 feet at ma turity. They bear early, sometimes at the end of the second growing season, if ■well attended. They should be planted in good soil and staked for support until they are well established in the soil. They may also be supported by a wire trellis, a wall or lattice support-Espalier training. These varieties are satis factory: Yellow Transparent, Golden, Delicious and Ri chard Delicious (or Winesap or Stayman Winesap). It is important to remember that I am giving fruitful com binations and varieties which I know are available on Mailing 9 rootstock. Both Winesap and Stayman are self- and cross-unfruitful so Golden Delicious is neces sary as a source of viable and compatible pollen to fertilize the blossoms of Winesap and Stayman . Second, the peach: The dwarf type peach va rieties are self-fruitful and, when mature, about 8 feet tall. This makes for easy pruning and spraying as well space conservation. We have a good selection of varieties, too. Here they are with flesh color in pa renthesis: Erly-Red Fre (white). If you do not object to white flesh, it is one of the early sorts; Hale Havl n (yell ow); and the old favo , rites, Elberta. Georgia Belle (white) is also avail able and has, for years, been a favorite variety of people in Piedmont North Carolina. Third, the pear: I am only recommending two dwarf type pear varie ties, both of which are re sistant to'fire blight. Moon glow is early, attractive and the flavor is rat ed as good. Magness is one of the newer blight resistant varieties of good quality and aromatic u It is self-unfruitful so must be planted with another va riety for pollination. Moon glow is compatible and will give a fruitful combinat ion. If you wish to try some of these dwarf types, let me know and I will put you in touch with a source of supply. building auditorium, Miss Ruth Harvey, attorney of Danville, Va.: and in the science build ing auditorium Dr. Helen Ed monds, dean of NCC's graduate and a member of the college's interim committee.
