BIRTHQUAKE CONTINUES:
BIRTHS DOWN
MARRIAGES UP
WASHINGTON, D. C.—While
figures don't lie they do de
ceive.
According to the U. S. Pub
lic Health Service, an estimat
ed total of 3,629.000 babies
were born in the U. S. in
1966—the lowest total since
1950. Are we in imminent
danger of having too few peo
ple in our fair land?
The answer is a resounding
"no." Despite the smaller num-,
ber of births, our population
increase by about two million,
taking into consideration the
number of people who died
last year and immigratns to
our shores.
Another clement of the pop
ulation picture to keep in mind
is the number of marriages
that take place. Marriages in
creased in 1966 to a total of
1.844 000, up about 20,000 from
1965. The government agency
predicts a continued upward
trend in marriages.
The more married couples,
the more babies, if past experi
ence is a guide. And the more
advances in science, the con
tinued decrease in the death
rate.

Heart Surgery
Patient Has
Bouncing Boy
BOSTON, Mass.—Miracles of
the medical variety continue to
happen. A 35-year-old woman
who was nine weeks pregnant
was admitted to Massachusetts
General Hospital in near heart I
failure. She had a record of ■
chronic heart failure and other
serious heart problems
Physicians decided th ? t
heart surgery was essential to
replace a faulty mitral value.
In the tenth week of pregnancy
the delicate operation was per
formed. There were no compli
cations and she was duly sent
home to carry on her normal
activities. Her pregnancy con- 1
tinued uneventfully.
Soon after the start of the
seventh month, she was ad
mitted to the Lying-in Division
of the Boston Hospital for
Women for close medical su
pervision. Therapy included
use of a carefully selected
drug, one that was known not
to cross the placental barrier—
thus avoiding harm to the un
born baby.
She carried her baby to term,
experienced an average length
labor, with no complications,
and was delivered of a normal
six-pound, 10-ounce boy. After
a 10-day hospital-stay the hap
py mother went home with as
surance from her physicians
that she would be well able to
care for her son.
