It was the third, largest ?nd most far - reaching vic tory negotiated in Chicago be tween Operation Breadbasket and major food chains during the last half var. DR. MARTIN Luther King Jr., SCLC president, joined the Chicago ministers and Donald S. Perkins, president of Jewel, in signing the agree ment. As a result of negotiations, the program assures not only new and upgraded positions for Negro employees, but also a hiring and training center to serve the Negro community and features to stimulate Ne gro businesses ~ including contractors, food firms, banks, sanitary and other ser vices. Jewel. Chicago's largest re tail food chain, agreed with Operation Breadbasket mini sters to do these things: • Onen 512 new and better payinp iobs for Negroes, and an additional 150 part-time "~ iobs for Negro youths. The full - time jobs will amount! to more than $3 million in new annual income for Nepro ! families. At the same time, | the comoany is establishing a i recruitment, hiring and train ing center for the new and future jobholders on S. j State Street. • Guarantee shelf space for Negro suppliers and Ne pro products in Jewel stores, and set up a marketing advi-j sory service for Negro busi-j nesses. I • Assure new and expand-; ' ing Jewel accounts in two I Negro banks (Seaway Na j tional Bank and Independence ij National of Chicago, thus It boosting investment funds I needed for economic develop '| ment of Negro neighborhoods.) ,!| • Provide Neero bi'i'ding !| contractors the opportunity to || work on new Jewel stores to j be built in the Chicago area. Operation Breadbasket has or-| ganized an independent alli ance of scavenger services to gain accounts in and around the ghetto which previously have gone to white firms. Th P agreement with Jewel brings the total number of jobs opened by SCLC's Chi cago Breadbasket program to more than 1,500. Income from these jobs is expected to soar ryi=t *lO million each year for Negro families. The pact with Jewel, and earlier set tlements with National Tea Com nan v and High - Low Foods Companv in Chicago will help the Negro commun ity to obtain millions more by increasing earning powers of Negro owened and operated businesses, according to th e Rev.
