The Academy, operated by the Maritime Administration of the United States Depart ment of Commerce, is located on Long Island Sound at Kings Point, New York, about twenty miles from New York City. The Academy educates and trains young men for careers as deck or engineering officers in the Merchant Marine through a four year college curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Sci ence degree. In addition to re ceiving a degree and a license as third officer or third assist ant engineer, graduates may be granted a Commission as Ensign, United States Naval Reserve, by the Department of the Navy. Candidates for admission must be nominated by a Con gressman or Senator, but ap pointments are made on the basis of candidates' competitive standing within the state from which nominated. Competitive standing is determined by Col lege Board Examination scores, high school rank in class, and subjective evaluation of candi dates' leadership potential and motivation. Men desiring ad mission to the Academy with the class entering in July 1968 should request nomination by a Senator or Congressman as earlyt as possible beginning September 1, 1967 and not la ted than January 31, 1968. We have had numerous Ne gro graduates from the Acad emy and eigth Negro cadets are presently enrolled. We hope that interest in Kings Point will continue to grow among young Negro men and that your organization will assist us in informing young Negroes of the opportunity available to them. Therefore, we ask your help in urging qualified young men in your area to request nominations as candidates for appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Acad emy and eight Negro cadets Information concerning the Academy program require ments for admission and pro cedure for requesting a nomi nation can be obtained by writ ing to: Admission Offices U.
