Aid Negroes in
Preparing for
Bus. Careers
ST. LOUIS, Missouri—Twen
ty-one Negro students from
throughout the nation are be
ginning work in a pioneering
graduate program designed to
prepare them for careers in
business management.
The program, first of its
kind in the nation, is being
operated by Washington Uni
versity in St. Louis, the Uni
versity of Wisconsin in Madison
and Indiana University in In
dianapolis.
The program was developed
after professors from the three
schools discovered that of 13,-
000 graduates business students
in the nation, not more than
50 were Negroes.
Objective of the program is
to help promote integration
through bringing more Negroes
into the mainstream of Ameri
can business life.
Twenty-five corporations con
tributed to the program Their
donations were matched on a
one-for-one basis by a $300,000
challenge grant from the Ford
Foundation.
The students who were accept
ward a master's degree in Busi
ness Administration, They were
chosen from several hundred
Negro College graduates who
had made inquiries about the
program.
The students ho were accept
ed received their undergradu
ate degrees in such subjects as
mathematics, political science,
engineering, sociology, philoso
phy and business administra
tion.
