Further in formation on veterans benefits may be obtained at any VA office. Q. —Several years ago I elect ed to receive Army retirement benefits rather than VA dis ability compensation. Is it too late to change now? A.—No. There is no deadline for a current election of com pensation in lieu of retired pay. However, you must undergo a VA medical examination to determine the degree and na ture of your disability and the amount of compensation to which you are entitled. You can make arrangements for thip examination through your near est Veterans Administration office. Q. —I am receiving a pension as a widow of a veteran and for our two children. I am con sidering marrying again. If I remarry will I lose this pen sion? A. Your pension will be terminated but your children will continue to receive bene fits if neither has an unearned income exceeding SI,BOO per year. Children do not lose their rights to a pension when the widow remarries or dies. They will continue to receive a pen sion until they reach 18 or, if they remain in school, until age 23. The rate for two chil dren together is $56 per month. Where there is only one child the rate is S4O. Q. —I entered active duty last year under the Six-Month Reserve trainii.g program and I served 182 days during this tour. Am I eligible for school ing under the G.I. Bill? A.—No. The fact that you had the required minimum of 181 days in service does not apply in your case. Dealer No. 1204 Many Have Been Given Good Jobs Program Operates In Nine Major Cities Of Nation WASHINGTON - Nearly 5,000 disadvantaged persons— mostly Negroes have been trained and placed in jobs through a "sell-help program launched almost four years ago by a Philadelphia minis ter. The program is the Oppor tunities Industrialization Cen ters (OIC) now operating in nine major areas across the nation and the founder is the Rev. Leon Sullivan. NEARLY 20,000 residents of city ghettos have entered the nine major centers and, in addition to those already placed in jobs, 4,500 others are currently undergoing training. Still others bavo been re ferred to appropriate agencies for. ,-»j*ecial assistance, ac cepted immediate employ ment or dropped out of the program. THE OIC program is cov ered in depth in a U. S. De partment of Labor monograph, fourth of a series focusing on federally-supported manpow er activities throughout the country. Philadelphia, the first of the centers, is the largest. In three and a half years of operation, 3,600 persons have been placed in jobs, with 98 per cent landing jobs in their skill areas. THERE AME currently 1,400 persons enrolled in the Phila delphia program, and there's a waiting list of some 6,000. The 3,600 newly employed workers, says the monograph, "are now adding more than $8 million annually to the pur chasing power of the city.." The cost of training each per son is about S9OO. ALL TOLD, there are 60 in pendent and active centers, including the major ones in Philadelphia, Erie and Har risburg, Pa.; Roanoke, Va.; Washington, D. C.; Menlo Park, Calif.; Seattle, Wash.; Little Rock, Ark.; and Okla homa City, Okla. Training courses vary with each locale, but typical are office practices, IBM key punch, brickmasonry, mach ine maintenance, restaurant practices and commercial cooking. THE OIC program, begun in an old jailhouse in the heart of North Philadelphia's main poverty section, consists of recruitment, counseling, , re- j mediation, vocational training j and job placement. Santa Is A Stranger To Some Lands NEW YORK San- TA Claus rules the Y u letide only in the United States and the British Isles. Across the rest of the Chris tian world, Santa is unknown but his place is taken by o ther colorful Christmas fig ures. And they don't all come on Christmas Eve, either, re ports the National Association of Greeting Card Publishers. LA BEFANA, the sweeper, is the good fairy of 11 alian children. On January 6th, the Eve of Epiphany, she knocks at each door with her broom, enters, and holds a candle 1 close to each child's face, as j she slips a toy under the pil- ! low. IN SIVEDISH horn e s on Christmas Eve, the Julbock, or Christmas goat, butts o pen the door. And while the children scatter and hide, he j throws presents through the door. | The youngsters of Syr i a receive their gifts from the I Gentle Camel. Legend goes t that this little camel fell ill | at the end of the exhausting t trip to Bethlehem, and the , Wise Men left him behind as I a pet for the infant Jesus. IN POLAND, children are , visited by the Good Stars of heaven. The Mother Star is a lovely woman in white robe and veil, and the Father Star brings gifts to children who say their prayers and sing their hymns to his satisfac tion. Christmas Eve itself is called the Festival of the Star. THIS MA\N CAN SAVE YOU Thurman Spicer flp Has Joined The Team Sec Him Today! Carpenter's Chevrolet Thurm»n Spioer E MAIN & ELfZABETH STS.
