Ernest F. Boyce, Colonial president, said the former Dutch Oven facilities wil' be used to greatly expand Colo nial's production of speciality breads, pastries and other sweet baked goods with the ultimate objective of supplying the en tire chain. Colonial will continue to op erate its present wholesale bakery in Atlanta and other bakeries in Charlotte, Norfolk and Cincinnati. Earlier this month, Colonial announced that it will con struct a highly automated plant designed to produce jams, jel lies and other kindred products in Lexington, North Carolina. This plant is expected to be in production by mid-summer. Mr. Boyce told stockholders recently that Colonial's food manufacturing and processing operations "have become in creasingly profitable over the past several years." The former Dutch Oven prop erty in Atlanta consists of a 49,000-square - foot building completely equipped to produce a wide variety of baked goods. The building is located on a four-acre tract of land on Stew art Avenue, S.W., near the Glenn Street intersection. Colo nial acquired the entire prop erty for cash. The plant will be part of Colonial's manufact uring department and will be under the immediate supervi sion of Charles R. Mills as plant manager. Mr. Boyce said that in addi tion to providing expanded baking facilities, the newly ac quired plant will permit Colo nial to free additional space in its present food distribution center in East Point for further expansion of processing and packaging there. Colonial presently is produc ing Its own mayonnaise, salad dressing, mustard and a variety of sauces. In addition, it has i complete coffee roasting and packaging plant and a tea blending and packaging plant. The company also packages ita own rice and a variety of dried vegetable*. Colonial, which has general headquarters in Atlatna, ope rates supermarketers in the fol lowing states: Alabama, Flori da, Georgia, Kentucky, Mary land, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia.
