'&£ : ' 7. f Garden Clubs of Durham Present Annual Flower Show The Garden Clubs of Durham presented their Annual Spring Flower Show on April 28, at the W. D. Hill Recreation Center. The show was dedicated to Mrs. Robert P. Randolph with the theme, "This Is Your Life." Mrs. Randolph was presented a plaque by the Garden Clubs in appreciation for her outstanding services given to the Garden Clubs of Durham. She received also many personal gifts of ap preciation. Preceded by a brief Memo rial Service for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. a program of music and literature, centered upon the theme of gardens and friendshipratisie by the audientri;' r^a^ ing by Mrs. Lucy M. Norwood; solos by Charles Joyner, Jr., and Mrs. Margaret Fuller, who was accompanied by Miss Mary Louise Stephens; and a read ing by Miss Valjeanne Jones. Miss Claudette Thomas, a ninth grade member of the Modern Dance Group, "The Modornettes, jvon first prize in the Rofelt Pasha Court 108, Daughters of Tsis Prodigy Hunt on Friday, May 3, in Rocky Mount, Miss Thomas, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Thomas of Durham, competed with stu dents in various areas of the Fine Arts. Twelve other members of "The Modernettes", (non-com petitive) performed on the pro gram. They interpreted "Carni val", "Someday" and "The Soul of J. B." The dancers were Patricia Blakley, Glinda Clements, Lin d a Clements, Wilma Harris, Geraldine Lyons, Phyllis Miles, Karen Morgan, Angela Page, Jean«tta Slade, Margaret Slade, Carolyn Worley. The address by Dr. Rose Butler Browne highlighted the theme and the program and was enthusiastically received. Other participants were Mrs. Roxie Rowland, who presented the plaque, and Mrs. Elnora Smith, Program Chairman; Mrs. Helen McLean, President of the Garden Clubs of Durham; and Mrs. Mozella McLaughlin, Show Chairman; all of whom made fitting remarks. THE SHOW The Flower Show was well attended. The clubs exhibited tremendous progress in most areas of display. In Part One, Horticulture Ex hibits. the Award •of Merit for tUurfWiy TTdrir culturaf exhibit was won by Les Fleurs Garden Clubs. West Durham and Lyon Park Clubs won most blue ribbons; Year Round came second and Les Fleurs and Dogwood third. Mrs. Edith M. GERTRUDE LONG The Year Round Garden Club met at the home of Mrs. Ger trude Long, April 22 on For mosa Street. Mrs. Virginia Al ston opened the Garden Gate, leading the group in singing the club song and saying the club prayer. She then read a beautiful poem entitled "I Planted a Garden." Mrs. Madge Hargraves, presi dent, presided over the busi ness session. There were re ports from various committees. The meeting then took the form of a workshop. Mrs. Ga zella Lipscomb, Mrs. Madge Hargraves and Mrs. Roland made corsages for inspection. Mrs. Long served a delicious repast to the following mem bers: Mesdames Virginia Al ston, Gazella Lipscomb, Lena Gates, Madge Hargraves, Flos sie Torain, Wilma Milum, Al ma Bennett, Plassie Harris and Miss Edna Mason. • * * COMPLETES WORK TOWARD B.S. DEGREE AT WSSC Mrs. Rita Alston Roberts of 913 Plum Street has completed work toward a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education at Win ston-Salem State College, April 29. Mrs. Roberts is a 1964 grad uate of Allen High School in Asheville. She will begin teaching in Martinsville, Va. in Septem ber. • • * REV. HERBERT H EATON GUEST OF HONOR OF u WHITE ROCK YOUTH CLUB White Rock Baptist Church 4 Youth Club had as its guest of honor, Rev. Herbert H. Eaton, Director of United Campus Christian Ministry at N, C. College. Rev. Eaton led the group in discussing the topic, "The New Morality." The club members found him very interesting and invited him to return at an early date. Refreshments were served. Reddrick are Entertained On Saturday, April 20, the children of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Reddrick entertained their parents honoring their 22nd anniversary. The Rev. A. L. Thompson officiated. Pianist was Mrs. Sandra Weiss, musical selections were "Th e Lord's Prayer" and "Always" by Misses Denise Harris, Shirley Taylor, Grethchen Reddrick and Fren chie Wiggins. Solo, "I Love You Truly", was by Miss Gretchen Wiggins and a poetic reading by Elizabeth Barrett Browning was read by Miss Carliss Red drick. Hostesses were Misses Dorethea, Sybil, Loviney Red drick and Reuben Reddrick, Mrs. Albert Bonds and Mirs Virginia Baucum. J The children choose Jade Green and White for their color scheme. Mrs. Reddricw wore an orange sleeveless dress with matching shoes accessories, crystal necklace and earrings. Immediately after the cere mony, the guests were served in the dining room. The table was beautifully covered with a jade green satin cloth with white ribbons.
