Typhoon Hits TAIPEI, Formosa Typhoon Elaine swept through Formosa leaving 29 dead, 20 missing and 23 injured, the Chinese Nationalist police announced Tuesday. Police said 338 houses had collapsed and 171 were badly damaged. Thousand of persons were rendered temporarily homeless after being forced to evacuate low-lying areas when the floodwaters invaded their homes. Many bridges were washed out by flood waters. Those who have greatness thrust upon them frequently have it taken from them equal ly abruptly. a| II llfc I ■KhE ■R S/SGT. MAROROVI Sgt. Hargrove Retires After 21 Years in Army S/Sgt. John H. Hargrove, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Har grove of Oxford, has complet ed twenty-one years of con tinuous military service. On December 29, 1947 he enlisted in the regular army at Fort Bragg. His basic training was completed at Fort, New Jersey, after which he was shipped to Japan for occupa tional duties and further train ing in combat tactics. In Japan, he was assigned to the 24th Infantry Regiment of the 25th Infantry Tropical lightening Division. In June, 1950, he was trans ferred to Korea twenty-one days after the outbreak of hos tilities. He served in combat for one year. During this time he was wounded twice then later requiring extensive hos pital care. His iast 12 months were spent in the Viet Crisis. He is the recipient of the following medals for services rendered in Korea: Combat Infantry Badge, The Presidential Unit Citation (U. S. A.), The Purple Heart © awards), The Korean Presi dential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal W/2 Clusters and Korean Conflict Service Medal. Other medals received: Good Conduct Medal W/fl Awards, American Service Ribbon and Medal, American Defense Rib bon and Medal, World War II Occuptaional Medal and The Accommodation Medal. His tour of duty has carried him to manv places, Germany, Japan and Europe. The largest single delegation came by bus from Red Mount Baptist Church where McCoy Bullock is scout School, Durham, but graduated from West Street High School, New Bern, in 1933. He was inducted into the Army in 1941. After service in the U. S. Army, he attended the National Bible Institute in New York City, Lawson's Bi ble Institute in New York City, and Hood Ideological Semi- master. Many of the awards were the direct result of a summer ad vancement session directed by attorney S. S. Howe. Scouts re ceiving the highest honors were Dewey Bullock (1), star rank; and Kenneth Gilliard (2), life nary, Salisbury. The Rev. M. F. Ward was licensed in the New York Con ference in 1944. He wac ad mitted to the Central North Carolina Conference of the AME Zion Church in 1946. Churches pastored in the last 22 years by the Rev. Ward are: O'Bryant's Chapel, Chapel Hill, Russell Chapel, Pittsboro, Cumnock Circuit, Cumnock, Qiestnut Circuit, Braodway, Kesler's Temple, Henderson, Cameron Grove, Broadway, and for the past six years at Trinity AME Zion Church, award. During his years of pastor ing he has renovated Ave churches, built oae, purchased several piofjK of church pro perties, paid off a 10-year mortgage on church properties in Dunn in 2'A years, and purchases some materials for the building of a new church in Dunn.
