ROWLAND The Year Round Garden Club met in regular monthly session Monday evening with Gardener Roxie Rowland at her home 2100 Fayetteville Street. This being the Christmas meeting the home was beautifully and taste fully decorated in the Xmas motif. The meeting was presi ded over by the Prefldent, Gardener Madge Hargrove. Ap propriate and impressive devo tions were given by Gardener Emma Randolph. Plans were completed for the Christmas Festival to be held on Decem ber 26, at the home of Garde ner Plassie Harris, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Make plans to attend this gala event. During the Social Hour Gardener Row land assisted by her daughter, Mrs. Beulah Hill served a most delicious repast to the follow ing Gardeners: Mesdames Ada Leach, Mary Thomas, Lena Gates, Edna Mason, Fannie Mc Lean, Gazelle Lipscomb, Plassie Harris, Annie Mayo, Alice Col lins, Virginia Alston, Emma Randolph, Gertrude Long, and Madge Hargrave. SUSIE DILLAHUNT The Friendly Lady Club met at the home of Mrs. Susie Dill ahunt- 207 Gould Street. A brief devotional period was held. EVERREADY CLUB HOLDS MONTHLY MEETING The Everready Club of the Orange Grove Baptist Church held its last monthly meeting of the year at the home of Mrs. Catherine Ferrell, 302 Wood Street. Devotions were opened by thf president, Mrs. Esther Moore Minutes of the last meeting were read and re ceived. Members present were: Mes dames Savater Hunter, Esther Moore. Roena Barbee. Thoma sine Langley, Virginia Peaks, Dorothy Gray, Shirley Hollo way, Ellie Mae Hubbard, Fele cia Revels, Louise Lee, Vir einia Bridges, Vernie Purvis, Edna Roster, Mary Patterson, and Bessie Jones. A Christmas savings saved by members of the club were given to the members, with a total of $77.79. After the business session the hostess served a delicious repast. The annual Christmas dinner for the club will be held Dec. 14 In the basement of the church. Mrs. Spaulding Speaks fo Phi Delta Kappa "The Role of The Teacher In The World of Violence" was the theme for the National So rority of Phi Delta Kappa's 1968 Teach-A-Rama. "The Teach-A-Rama" is one phase of the National's Five Point program. The forum was recently held at the Suite of the Pear son, Malone. Johnson, and De- Jarman Law Firm, 112 West Parrish Street. Mrs. Spaulding, the featured speaker, was the organizer of the "Women In Action For The Prevention of Violence and Its Causes." In her speech, she focused on the present composition, struct ure, the role of the individual and of groups in finding rea sons for violence and working toward eradicating them. She, urged those in attendance to ioin forces with the "Women In Action." The "Women In Action For The Prevention of Violence" had its inception subsequent to a forum sponsored by McCall's magazine in New York in which Mrs. Spaulding attended. Following the forum, a social hour and tour of the facilities ensued. The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa is an organization of women in education. The Supreme Basileus is Mrs. Ma ble Bouldin of Chicago, Illinois. Mrs. Martha H. Johnson is the local Basileus. Cheyenne Scouts to Hold Xmas Party At Gradv 'Center"" The Cheyenne Leaf District, Boy Scouts of America, will hold its annual Christmas party for boys at the T. A. Grady recreation center on Lakeland Street Saturday, December 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The period between 11:00 and 1:00 will feature games and other activities for cub scouts. Inter-patrol competition for scouts and explorers will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 Recruiting is also being em phasized and active scouts are to bring in new prospects be tween 8 and 18 years of age. Hillsborough Happenings | »y Slurry Sh«kll« Orange High School was the setting for the first Hillsbo rough "Junior Miss Pageant." Participating in the event were senior girls from Orange High. The Junior Miss winner was Miss Marie Carroll. Marie is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. L. W. Carroll of Hillsborough. Miss Carroll played the "Nor wegian Concerto" for her talent entry. College night was held on Tuesday night, December 2. College representatives from surrounding colleges and uni versities were present. College night was the first county-wide program for Hillsborough. Chapel Hill High Juniors and seniors were present for the program. The Orange High Panthers have gotten off to a great start this year. Chapel Hill was the setting for a double -header on Caswell County Happenings By DOROTHY AND PERCY The First Baptist Church of Yanceyville was the setting, November 28 at 4 o'clock for the wedding of Miss Sarah Ann Johnson and Chester Wiggins. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Johnson of Yanceyville and Mrs. Juanita Wiggins and the late Chester Wiggins of Raleigh. Rev. J. C. Brown officiated at the double ring ceremony, and the bride's father gave her in marriage. A program of wedding music was rendered by Martin Bank, organist of Philadelphia and soloist, Carolyn Williams of Portsmouth, Virginia. The bride was attired in an Empire A-line gown of de satin with high - necked lace yoke and long pointed sleeves en hanced with a set - in lace panel from shoulder to wrist. The front skirt and detachable watteau train was appliqued with chantilly lace motifs. Her bouffant veil of silk illusion was held by a forward head piece of lace petals pearl edged with double back bow and pearl star and crystal, trim and she carried a cascade of white roses. LEVEL MISSIONARY CLASS HOLDS CHRISTMAS PARTY AND BANQUET The Mount Level Baptist Church Missionary Class held its banquet and Christmas par ty Saturday, December 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Chicken Box, 3019 Fayetteville Street. Open ing song was "The Twelve Days of Christmas," led by Miss Violet Perry. Grace was repeated in unison by every one. "Come All Ye Faithful" was sung and prayer was by Mrs. Syminer Daye. The Christ mas Story (Luke 2:8-14) was read by Mrs. Mozelle Pettiford and then "O Little Town of Bethlehem" was sung. Mrs. Roumania Lipscomb read "Its Beginning to Txjok Like Christ was" and fun-time was in charge of Mrs. Mildred Neal. Christmas spirit was boom ing high with singing of Chrstmas Carols such as "Deck The Halls", "The First Noel", and "Silent Night." Miss Perry was in charge of the singing and Oren Marsh (Tracy) was the organist. Santa came around with lots of beautiful gifts that sur rounded the Christmas tree. This project is being made possible by the combined effort of the citizens and members of the West Ave. and Stanley Road Communities which form the Mill Grove Community League. All mem (Continued on page 8) Retirement Clab of NCM Meets at "Y" At the regular meeting of the North Carolina Mutual Re tirement Club held November 21, at the YWCA building, and after the opening song and nraver by C. C. Smith Mrs. Ce lesta Smith, read the "Real Meaning of Thanksgiving" and a beautiful poem on "Thank God for Little Things" by Helen Steiner Rice. Many other ideas were advanced during the eat ing of a most delicious Thanksgiving dinner prepared for the occasion by Mrs Scurdy and discussing of many current topics and events The most important one, how ever, was advanced by the president C M Palmer, who read the recent announcement of the plan from Central Caro lina Orphange (Colored Orph anage of Oxford) regarding their drive for needed funds to complete the new Recreation Building for the Orphange. The announcement met the approv al of the members present and the suggestion of Mr. Palmer to make the Christmas Project among the members to raise as much as they can for the Orphange in the name of the Retirement Club the effort for the Project to be ended at the regular meeting at the "Y" oil December 19. The effort, how ever, does not interfere with the regular dontations given by individual citizens who have been contributing to the Orpha nage over the years but as a supplement effort in the name of the Retirement Club. The North Central Area is com posed of Person, Orange, and Durham counties. On behalf of the South Roxboro Council, its president, Frank Johnson was presented a check for SSO by Reuben Bowles of the Peoples Bank.
