Disclosure of recognition came as the first synagogue built in Spain in 600 years was formally opened Monday night by rabbis from London, New York and Buenos Aires. The new synogogue, Beth Yaakov, will serve Madrid's 2,500 jews as recognition of the Jewish religion by the Spanish Ministry of Justice granted last Saturday, removed the last barrier to religious equality for this nation's 8,000 Jews. The Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492. Officiating at the opening of the synagogue were Dr. Solomon Gaon, grand rabbi of London's Sephardic communities; Dr. Davis Kahana, gAnd rabbi of Argentina's Judaic communities, and Rabbi Harold H. Gordon, vice president of the Rabinnical Council of New York. The four-story synagogue was built at an estimated cost of 1250,000 by private donations. When Polish-born industrialist Max Mazin settled in Madrid in 1950, the capital's only syna gogue was in a basement. Jews then had to seek special permission to hold services. The temple was moved to the second floor of another rented building in the middle 1950s as the Jewish community grew with immigrants from North Africa and other parts of Europe.
