Demo Precincts
Integrated in"
Rocky Mount
By J. B. Harren
ROCKY MOUNT, N. C. -
For the first time in modern
Tarheelia history (it is be
lieved), at least two Rocky
Mount Democratic voting pre
cincts have been integrated-and
with perfect cordialitv being
exhibited by the majority
whites.
The Rev Lloyd B. Morris,
Mt. Pisgah United Presbyterian
USA minister, was nominated
by J. B. Harren to be the 2nd
vice chairman of precinct 12-1.
Morris was unanimously elect
ed by the eleven precinct mem
bers present. Morris and Harren
were the only Negroes present,
but between them, they nomi
nated five other Blacks - in ab
sentia • to serve on the 18- i
members precinct committee
to the June 20th Edgecombe '
Democratic convention at Tar J
boro. Harren was included on j
the precinct committee.
W. L Goodwyn Jr., was re- |
elected precinct chairman; Mrs. j
Joe Floyd, Ist vice chm; L. B. j
Morris, 2nd v. chm; Frank R.
Gupton, 3rd v. chm; and Mrs.
W. W. Ham, sec-treas.
On the Nash County side of j
town, at the precinct meeting
in ward four, Miss Claudia Mc-
Callop was elected 2nd vice
precinct chairman. Alex H.
(Tuffy) Bryant, recent unsuc- |
cessful candidate for city coun- |
cil, was named, along with j
Boyd L. Ancrum, Charles
Smith Sr., and Mrs. Lillian j
Smith Plttman, as Tan mem
bers of the precinct delegation.
In Edgecombe precinct 12- j
4, the all-black precinct, Mrs. |
Esmieralda Rich Hawkins was |
named as chairman with the j
Rev. George W, Dudley as vice
chairman. The Rev. Elbert Lee
Jr., was among the precinct
committeemen named to work
for party harmony. Reports j
were not available on, Negro |
participation in other precincts J
The atf-black precinct 12-4 !
with 1,959 registrants was j
charged with the loss of the [
recent councilmanic campaign j
against the white incumbent
waged by Alex Bryant when |
only 585 of the ail-Negro pre
cinct voters bothered to vote
for the black candidate, despite
the strong contention of hun
dreds for an all-Black ward and
a Black councilman.
It is a matter of history i
that six Negroes have made the
race here for city council a total
of nine times without winning.
This latest attempt by "Tuffy"
Bryant was defeated mainly be
cause the all-Black precinct 12-
4 failed to support what they
had been clamoring for a
black councilman. Even one
all-white ward gave Bryant 77
votes.
Those 'in the know' will tell j
you that all Negro candidates
who have presented themselves j
for city council here - over the !
past twenty years - have been !
victims of petty jealousies, per- J
sonality clashes and the inabili
ty of the Blacks to agree on J
any one candidate, despite the j
fact that the whites assisted 1
greatly, this year, in trying to |
elect a Negro.

LDF Sues Cannon Mills Firm
For Flagrant Job Discrimination
SALISBURY Attorneys
of the NAACP Legal Defense
and Educational Fund, Inc.
(LOF) filed a complaint this
week in the U. S. District
Court here against what may
be one of the most pervasive
and tenacious policies of em
ployment discrimination main
tained by a major U. S. cor
poration.
The Cannon Mills Company,
based in Kannapolis, is one of
the largest textile companies in
the nation and has therefore
received key defense contracts.
According to LDF attor
neys, in most cases of job dis
crimination complaints, textile
companies have at least re
sponded with written as
surances of reform.
However, despite several
actions against Cannon Mills,
they assert, the company has
refused to offer any such as
surancia.
>, The company is charged
with the following violations
of tha fair employment prac
tices provisions of the 1964
Ovll Rights Act (Title VII):
* recruitment of new em
ployees through means de
signed to reach more white
persons than black;
* use of arbitrary standards
of hiring which are irrelevant
to job requirements and have
the effect of weeding out black
applicants;
* segregated jobs, depart
ments and classifications on
the basis of race, sex, or both;
* residential housing, owned
or controlled by Cannon Mills,
is segregated on the basis of
race, with housing for blacks
inferior to that of whites;
* the company excludes
virtually all blacks from super
visory, managerial, profes
sional, and clerical jobs on the
basis of race and sex;
* black employees are as
signed the lowest paid, most
strenuous duties, hazardous to
health and personal safety;
* the company depresses all
wages of black employees by
classifying jobs as "white" and
"Negro" and pkying the lowets
wages possible under the latter
classification;
* the company depresses
wages of female employees by
