Coach Quieft Assumes Brighter
Aftiude for 70 NCCU Gridders
After a spring and summer
spent mourning for departed
backs and blockers, North
Carolina Central University's
head football coach, George
Quiett, seems ready to look on
the brighter side.
Coach Quiett, who has been
advertising the weaknesses of a
team which lost a host of
seniors (including the entire
starting backfield), now admits
that he can see a few patches
of blue through the clouds.
"We should be about as
strong as we were last year on
defense," Quiett says. "Our
pass rush will be weaker with
the loss of Sam Singletary and
Jerome Gantt."
Gantt and Sigletary were
among the outstanding seniors
of last year's team. Both signed
professional contracts last
spring. They were only two of
several top players, however.
Also missing are offensive
tackle Douglass Wilkerson. first
round draft choice of the
Houston Oilers, split and..
Julian Martin, and quarterback
Herman Mathews.
One key issue not yet re
solved is whether the player
Quiett describes as most like
Wilkerson among the returnees
will in fact be able to play.
"A great deal of our success
will depend on how Bracy
Bonham's knee operation turns
out. If it is successful, then we
will be able to start a letter
man at each position on the of
fensive line."
Bonham, 6-1 and 245
pounds, is a sophomore from
Winston-Salem, and runs the
100 yard dash in less than ten
seconds. He and Wilkerson

may have been the fastest of
fensive tackles in the game last
year, and were certainly among
the most outstanding in the
CIA A.
Both played key roles in
NCCU's 7-2-1 record in 1969.
None of the returning backs
are from the starting line-up,
but Mike Carter, a 9.7-second
springer, and chunky Jefferson
Inman, a 210-pound fullback,
rolled up good yardage aver
ages as substitutes last year.
Otis Alston, a senior halfback,
is rated by Quiett as "the most
complete back" on the team,
and had an outstanding spring
practice rating.
Garvin Stone, who provided
breathers for Mathews at quar
terback last season, will be the
team's field general this season.
Game experience, Quiett says,
is all Stone needs. "It is known
that Stone is a passer. Our re
cruiting was designed to meet
the purpose of gearing our of
fense around the pass."
The team's most publicized
recruit, howeveT, is a running
back. Greg Brewer was heavily
recruited when he played at
Hillside High School, and act
ually played freshman ball at
Michigan State before entering
the service. Out again, he will
play for his hometown college.
Among other recruits,
Quiett says, are "three of four
who are capable of running the
100 under 10 flat."
Only one freshman, Quiett
reports, stands a chance of
making the defensive line.
Ronald McNeil at defensive
end may join the returning
end may join the returning
stalwarts, who include All-
American candidate Robert

Holloway and Joseph Harrell
("the most underrated player
on the NCCU team during the
past two years") at linebacker.
Back In the defensive secon
dary will be quad-captain Pete
Quinn and his junior cohort
Charles Bellinger. Between
them, they intercepted 19 pas
ses last season.
The Eagles will test them
selves against the toughest pos
sible opposition in their first
game. They meet Alcorn A&M
University of Mississippi in
Philadelphia, Pa., on Septem
ber 26.
Alcorn has not lost a game
in two years, and holds the
mythical "black football
championship."
