NCCU Coed is
Woman Athlete
Of the Year
At the recent Women's
Athletic Association Sports
Day meet at North Carolina
Cental University, students
from five colleges and univer
sities - Hampton Institute,
Virginia State, Bennett, South
Carolina State, and NCCU -
were competing for the highest
athletic award given .during
the year to the most out
standing woman athlete.
'Hie coveted award of the
Women's Sports Day Associa
tion, "Woman Athlete of the
Year," 1971, was won by Miss
Margartha Chambers, a native
of Winston-Salem, Miss
Chambers grew up in Win
ston-Salem, where she was
reared by her maternal grand
mother, Mrs. Bertha G. Vin
son. She is the daughter of
Mrs. Bertha I. Eason of Bridge
port, Conn, and the niece of
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Alston
of Durham.
Miss Chambers has been
an outstanding performer and
leader in the NCCU Women's
Athletic Association for her
entire four year college carr?r.

dent and secretary oi ue
NCCU WAA. For three
Miss Chambers has been a
member of the WAA Cham
pionship Team. This is another
distinct honor which is very
noteworthy. Her leadership
and athletic skill have been
key factors in the champion
ship play of the teams on
which she has participated.
Miss Chambers has also
exhibited leadership capabili
ties in her professional or
ganization, the North Carolina
Central University Physical
Education Majors Club. She
has been an active pertici

Miss Chambers, a major in
the Department of Phyricai
Education is currently serving
as a student teacher at Githens
Junior High School in Durham
County. During her junior
year, she served as a volun
teer teaching assistant in phy
sical education at R. N. Harris
Elementary School.
Because of her most out
standing leadership, participa
tion, cooperation, and dedica
tion, Miss Chambers is also
scheduled to receive an addi
tional award pdor to her
graduation on May 30. Hie
NCCU PEM Club award,
"PEM Club M*jor of the
Year" will be presented to
Miss Chambers as the climax
to a tremendous four years
career as a major student in
the Department of Physical
Education. Her participation
has been most outstanding in
both athletics and professional
activities, a combination which
will surely mean continued
