'Sizable' Fish Kill Is
Found in Neuse
A "sizable'' fish kill of
undetermined origins took
place in the Neuse River north
of Raleigh sometime last
weekend.
Although Wildlife Resources
personnel have not determined
the number of fish killed,
estimates range from "several
hundreds to thousands,"
Harry Cornell, director of the
island fisheries division of the
Wildlife Resources Commis
sion, said Monday.
"I saw a heap of dead fish
when I was out there this
afternoon There were quite
a few fish and they were
quite dead. We won't be able
to tell how many until we've
finished picking them up," he
added.
'it wasn't like the Yadkin
River kill, but it was sizable,"
Connell said.
Investigators from the
Department of Water and Air
Resources declined to
speculate on possible causes,
pending reports from both
their department and the
Wildlife Resources Commis
sion.
The area where the fish
were found stretches roughly
from the U. S. 401 bridge
over the Neuse (about iive
miles north of Raleigh) south
to the area of the Buffalo
Road bridge.
It is not known, however,
exactly where the kill occurr
ed "it looked like the fish
had been dead for about a
day or two. They probably
died somewhere upstream and
then floated downstream."
Cornell said.

of the kill won't be released
until the Water and Air
Resources Board meets in
August.
Officials think that the kill
is over, but they are not cer
tain.
"We believe that no fish
are dying at the moment, but
I'm not ready to say that
they haven't stopped dying.
It looks like it's over, but
you can't be too sure about
something like that," said
Darwin Coburn, chief of the
water quality control division
of the Water and Air
Resources Department.
An investigation and collec
tion of the dead fish began
Monday morning, with
Wildlife Commission and
Water and Air Resources per
sonnel checking the river from
two motorboats.
Tubloads of dead eels, cat
fish, panfish, bluegill and bass
were found by the
invstigators, Cornell said.
Word of the fish kill reached
the two departments late Sun
day night, too late to begin
an immediate investigation,
Cornell said. "This is pretty
late to start investigating. In
something like this the sooner
you get to the kill, the better
chances you have of deter
mining the causative agent."
Cornell theorized that the
kill could have been caused
by a lack of dissolved ojygen
in the water, caused by the
dumping of a large amount of
organic waste.

S. C. Bars Horses
From Some States
COLUMBIA, S. C. '
South Carolina officials Mon
day clamped an embargo on
all horses entering the state
from Texas or any other state
where Venezuelan sleeping
sickness has been reported.
The action by the Clemson
University board- of trustees
is effective Tuesday "until
further notice."
In a statment, the board
said the action was being
taken to prevent the disease
which has killed thousands of
horses in Texas and Mexico
from spreading into South
Carolina.
Horses from any state under
quarantine for the Venezuelan
sleeping sickness also is bar
red from being brought into
the state.
Meanwhile, the state
veterinarian said tissue
samples from several dead
horses were being examined
to determine if they died from
a less potent form of sleeping
sickness.
A Camden veterinarian, Dr.
Harry Brown, said Sunday he
believed a number of horses
in Kershaw County had died
from the Eastern-Western
sleeping sickness, akin but far
less serious than the
Venezuelan variety that ha£
killed thousands of horses in
Texas and Mexico.
