The bond purchase totaled $2.8 hillinn LIGHT TOILS CRIME A recent survey of 1,300 police chiefs confirmed the importance of adequate lighting in the war against crime and vandalism. A drop in crime was reported by 85'/ of the chiefs when lighting was improved. Take precautions to protect your home against burglary. Lighting experts at GTE Sylvania Incorporated recommend: setting several lights to timers to go on at dusk; leaving your backyard well lighted, and keeping a porch light burning when you're away from home. It's easy for a home owner to take a few safety pre cautions and help prevent crime. Main St., Durham Ph. 682-0451 9 7^7 Casey Ides is five feet, six inches tall, stockly built, wears a black patch over the left lens of her glasses, and is probably known by no one in Durham. But Casey is known, by jumpers, by throwers, officials, and judges from New Zealand to Bakersfield, California. Casey is a track fan. The Pan Africa-USA Tract Meet brought her to Durham. Casey worked for Civil Ser vice in the Social Security Pay ment Department for fifteen years. During that time, she averaged 72 hours a week. "After the war, people were scarce. We could never train enough people to fill all the openings we had. Our usual week was 11 hours on week days, 9 hours on Saturdays, and an optional 7 hours on Sundays. I saved every cent of my overtime during thoGe fifteen years, knowing someday, how I would use it. I planned all my vacations around major track meets and would have quit my job rather than miss the Olympic Games." When Casey retired, she started traveling. This past year she covered the West Coast from San Diego to Ore gon, nine times, following the runners. "My father was a wo man's track coach and al though I, due to an affliction of my back, could not actively participate, I became an ardent spectator at an early age." Casey becomes almost vio lent when you mention the lack of interest in women's track. "Why that damn Los Angeles Times absolutely re fuses to admit that there 16 such a sport as women's track.' They will not even look at an article I do on it. But they cure as hell grab it when I do it on a man's event." Casey tells the intimate happenings of track, the thinfp usually missed by the eye of the camera. "It was the British Commonwealth Games in 1970 when Debbie Brill, the only western hemisphere six foot high jumper, took first place. Hie Queen was awarding the medals and up came Deb bie. The Queen is a small wo man, and Debbie is a rather tall girl, therefore, making an in teresting looking couple to be gin with. The Queen started to put Debbie's medal over her head, around her neck, when she got the catch in the ribbon caught in Debbie's hair. Be ing a mother herself, the Queen did not panic in the least. She simply asked Debbie to lean closer, stretched, look ed, and finally managed to lower the medal around Deb bie's neck. It was Debbie's first international competition and she was a bit shaken by the whole matter." In 1968 at the Olympics in Mexico City, Casey was having transportation problems. The place she was staying was across the city from the stad ium, and every time she tried to get a bus back to her hotel, she could never find one head ed that way. The Olympic Vil lage, where the athletes and judges were staying was only two blocks away, however, and Casey came up with a uni que way of getting to the games. "All the judges had name on their coats say (Continued on page 10A) dfc&l yflrjjU^^^B m m v jmSgj // *?r '«™ - - - Jf- I cMi i• 1 JIUH|MPHUJiW*wM|MK' .niMinif ii'. ~ .:" • Scarborough & Hargeff Ambulance Service Tops July 16-17 marked the extravaganza of the Pan Africa U.
