Missionary Program ■ Joseph T. Mitchell, Director State Rally is Sponsored by Prospect Chap. Prospect Chapter No. 379, Order of the Eastern Star sponsored a State Rally with each state being represented with a Star. The most interest ing program was held on No vember 14, 1971 at the Com munity Baptist Church on Bar bee Road. After the Opening Song of "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross," Scripture lessons was read by Sister Grace Watson, followed by prayer, led by Rev. E. T. Thompson, the pas tor of the church. A parade of the fifty states was then presented with each state being represented with a star. The Star and State raising the largest amount of funds were then crowned Mrs. U.S.A. Mrs. Lela Streeter, represent ing Mississippi, was the winner. Pennsylvania, represented by Mrs. Elizabeth Young, was the first runner up. Second runner up was Mrs. Mary Evans, who represented the Statt of Okla homa. Shown in the interesting pictures are the participants and the winners in the State Rally. From left to right in Photograph 1 is Mrs. Lela Streeter, wfcc represented the state of Mississippi, being crowned by Brother J. A. Carter, Worthy Patron Look ing on is Mrs. Fannie Green, (Worthy Matron). Other pictures from left to right show second runner-up, Mrs. Mary Evans, who repre sented the State of Oklahoma; first runner-up, Mrs. Elizabeth Young, who represented Pennsylvania; and the winner, Mrs. Lela Streeter, who re presented Mississippi. Shown in the large group pictures are the several participants in the State Star Rally along with Brother J. A. Carter (Worthy Patron) and Brother Frank Jacobs. The group extends its thanks to Rev. E. T. Thompson and the many friends of Pfop pect Chapter for helping them in such a successful venturej Special thanks were extended to Mr. & Mrs. Burgess Leathers for serving as the Finance Secretaries. First District SS Convention To Convene The First District Sunday School Convention will con vene at the Calvary Baptist Church, December 10-12, Rev. W. L. Butler is the pastor. Devotions will be led by Calvary Baptist Missionary Circle at 7:30. The president will preside over the business of the convention. At 8:10 report of Field Missionary, Rufus Ferrell, Cleo Green and James Tutt. Different topics will be discussed by various groups. Calvary Baptist Junior Choir will render the music and the presentation of trophy will be by the president, which will go to the church with the larg est attendance. Sunday morning 9:45 a.m. Sunday School. At 11:00 a.m. devotions will be led by the CHURCH HEWS In Memoriam Although 1 had known the late Theodore H. Freeland less than a year, I learned he was a lovable man. We were thrown together by accident when I went to the High Rise Apart ment building on East Main Street to accompany a singer. While there I played some hymns accompaning the seniors there who enjoyed singing under the direction of their leader Theodore. I en joyed this initial visit with them so much that 1 continued the contacts each Thursday morning. Several weeks were to pass before I learned that Theodore was an incomparable tenor. One morning he sang for us "Mother Machree" by 01- Senior Missionary Circle and music will be furnished by Calvary Baptist Senior Choir. The sermon will be delivered by Rev. W. L. Butler. The Junior program will be pre sided over by the Secretary. Remarks by the president, Mc- Kinley Mangum. FREELAND cott & Ball. Unlike most singers, Theodore had a touch of the divine in his singing. Long years ago I learned another late Durhamite also has this spark. Joha Allen Foushee and Freeland knew not how blest they were among singers. This elusive spark favors not many singers. Roland Hayes has it four fold. The Gods are scant with this miracle touch. Training brings it not; one is to the manner born, like unto the late preachers Charles Tindley formerly of Tindley Temple Philadelphia and J. C. Austin, Pilgrim Baptist Church Chica go. These men could hold the Jkrommw ofjk&ji.. . is appreciated by families who are faced with the necessity of funeral arrangements. Our modern facilities, together with our many years of ex perience, relieve them of this burden.
