In addition to these funds, other Federal agencies have been encouraged to participate in aiding the predominantly black college to increase its urban involve ment. The contract brings with it an additional $70,000 commitment of funds from the Office of Education in the.De partment of Health, Education and Welfare, and the HUD Community Planning and Management Office. This contract brings the level of TSU's involvement with the Model Cities program in Houston to more than $1 million in Federal and local funds. Signing the contract today were Floyd H. Hyde, HUD Assistant Secretary for Com munity Development, and Dr. Granville M. Sawyer, President of Texas Southern University. Specific aims of the pro gram are: . To halt the urban decay that surrounds the university by utilizing the institution's expansion plan as a communi ty development program; . To mobilize the broad re sourced of the university to complement the efforts of local government in the local Model Cities program. . To train and mobilize neighborhood youth and col lege students to assist in com munity development projects; . To make available univer sity personnel as technical as sistants to community groups active in the Model Cities pro- H. R. Sims of Urban League Joins Johnson & Johnson NEW BRUNSWICK, N. J. - Harold R. Sims, acting executive director of the National Urban League, has been named director of Corporate Affairs for Johnson & Johnson, the worldwide manufacturer of medical, consumer and in dustrial products. Mr. Sims, 36, Joins Johnson & Johnson after three years at the National Urban League. When Whitney M. Young, Jr. died in March, 1971, Mr. Sims was named acting executive director. President Richard M. Nixon recently commended Mr. Sims on his leadership of the National Urban League in a letter stating: "I congratulate you on your important contributions to " i ■lit Wyfl ■ Harold R. Sims the organization, and I thank you for the profound service you have done our nation in keeping the spirit of Whitney Young alive." At Johnson & Johnson, Mr. Sims initially will be in volved in developing and implementing minority and urban affairs programs. Commenting on his de cision to join the company, Mr. Sims said he felt "John son & Johnson's well-de fined sense of social re sponsibility and its pioneer ing role in enlightened man agement and product in tegrity create an environ ment that will enable me to work toward goals I believe all business should be striv ing for in today's society." Serving in the United States Army from 1957 to 1967, Mr. Sims attained the rank of major and was the I first black officer assigned as secretary to the General Staff. He played a major role in expanding equality of op portunity for the black sol dier and helped to shape the Department of Defense's open housing policy for servicemen. Prior to joining the Urban League, Mr. Sims was ex ecutive secretary to Sargent Shriver, director, Office of Economic Opportunities, from 1967 to 1969. Gas and heartburn?
