Keeping The
FAITH
"I cannot imagine myself
without religion. I could aa
easily fancy a living body
without a heart..."
This statement by Helen
Keller, a legend in her own
time, occurs in her fascina
ting book My Religion.
"For nearly six years," she
wrote, "I had no concepts
whatever of nature or mind
or death or God. I literally
thought with my b0dy....1
was like an unconscious clod
of earth."
Slowly and painfully, she
learned the names of the
things she could touch; she
learned to talk and to listen
with her hands. She learned
to read - to write, and type
write and was eventually
: graduated from Radcliffe
! College with honors. No
! woman of any age has been
1 more justly celebrated.
Little is known, however,
about Miss Keller's spiritual
i beginnings, her personal
religious creed. Although she
studied the writings of Plato,
; Socrates, and many others,
she was most influenced by
> century scientist, theologian,
and philosopher. It was from
; reading Swedenborg's works
! that Helen Keller learned of
the spiritual world. ' The
courage and faith from this
; knowledge enabled her to
! provide leadership and en
couragement to countless
; thousands.
Eloquently, poetically,
and with deep understand
ing, Helen Keller makes a
statement of her faith.
"Sick or well, blind or
seeing, bond or free, we are
here for a purpose and how
ever we are situated, we
please God better with useful
deeds than with many pray
ers or pious resignation."
i My Religion , now in a
newly designed paperback
with an introduction by Dr.
Nortfihn Vincent Peale, this
inspirational volume is avail
able for only $1.25 at the
Swedenborg Foundation,
Dept. MR, 139 East 23rd St.,
'New York, N.Y. 10010.

HELPFUL ADVICE FOR
THE WOMAN DRIVER
To maximize your chances
of surviving an auto accident,
buckle down to buckling up
your seat belts.
Advocates of seat belts
usually stress that buckling
up will-in the event of an
impact-tend to keep you
from slamming forward into
the steering wheel or instru
ment panel or both. But
that's only part of the story.
Equally important-espec
ially in a potential accident
; situation-la that seat belts
keep your nailed' down, keep
you in position to stater and
, drive the car; they not only
I restrain your forward mo
tion, but they keep you from
sliding on the driver's seat
Say you blow the left
front tire and your car ia
: suddenly and violently
{thrown into a broadside
slide. The dynamics of such
a situation dictate that you 11
be thrown to your right,
possibly even against the
passenger door. You can't
steer the car from the pass
enger aide. You can't control
it when you're rolled up in a
ball on the floor. True, cinch
ing your seat belt down tight
may wrinkle a skirt, ruin an
artfully pleat, but
consider the alternative.
