RECREATION PROGRAMS EASE PAINS OF WINTER Boredom and mischief for the winter is no longer a problem for some children and adults here In Durham. Recreation programs, including Karate, cheerleading, creative dancing, and arts and crafts, are being provided for ten weeks at the, Walltown, T.A., Grady, and JLyon Park recreation centers. A free course, in income tax filing Is even being offered to adults from five to six o'clock on Tuesday nights. "The main purpose for these recreational activities," says director Carl Washington of Durham, "is to expose adults and children to programs not only for fun and leisure but for experience, knowledge, sportsmanship, and brotherhood." The karate class is for beginners, pre-teens, teenagers, and adults, ranging in age from 13 to 58. Creative dancing Is for children under 13. Fundamentals of cheerleading is for girls aged 12 to 16. Washington says attendance and response have been very good so far. NEED VOLUNTEERS SAYS PRISON CHIEF Mrs. Juanita Baker, Black Superintendent of the North Carolina Correctional Center for Women, spoke to the Criminal Justice Club of North Carolina Central University Monday, January 21. Mrs. Baker made a plea for more student involvement in the volunteer programs at the correctional center in Raleigh. Mrs. Baker stated that there is currently a community volunteer program in which women and married couples may sponsor an inmate on week-ends and holidays. Amedee, professor at A&T. "The institute tries to inform the community whenever possible, and we were quite impressed by the teenagers sophistication-they don't take everything you say for granted." ' The 114-member band, led by drum major Jeffery 'Lawrence and head majorette Pam Stanback, is directed by Mr, Clark Edgerton Jr. Mr. Edgerton has been the director of the band for the last 6 years and has taught band in the Durham City Schools for 9 years. This is the first time that Mr. Edgerton has taken a band to the Mardl Gras, and this Is the first time in the history of Hillside that its band has participated in a festivity of this kind. All of the students in the 'band and Mr. Edgerton have 6een working extremely hard to prepare themselves for the trip. In preparation for the trip they have been trying to raise $9,000 to for accommodations. So far they have reached the goal of approximately $3,000. They are asking all in the community to make contributions. "If the goal Isn't reach, reported Mr. Edgerton," each member would have to pay $90, which is Impossible for some. As a result, the trip will not be made." Some of the activities in which they have engaged to raise money are dances, talent shows, dinners basketball games, and massive contributions from the community. Dedicated volunteers are needed to help the four hundred women in the institution, she said. According, to Mrs. Baker the ages , of the Inmates range from sixteen to over seventy years. BAKER SPEAKS CORRECTION JOBS OF Mrs. Juanita Baker, the first Black female to be superintendent of a correction center in North Carolina, spoke for the Criminal Justice Club at North Carolina Central University Monday, January 21. Presently she is administrator at North Carolina Correctional Center for women in Raleigh. Mrs. Baker said the future Jot blacks in criminal justice Is bright, but there are not enough blacks interested in the system, especially as administrators. She also said that there are a number of administrative positions with salaries ranging from $10,000 -$15,000.
