Muddled, Dangwout The muddled and dangerous political situations in Britain ana Israel should be a caution to those who have been glibly pro moting the idea of parliamentary govern ment in the United States. Girl Friends Launch Black Heritage Project The Durham Chapter of Girl Friends, Inc. has launched a. search for the literature, art, history, artifacts, and any other materials related to the heritage of Black North Carolinians. Led by a committee of six Girl Friends Margaret Falkener (chairman), Alma Bennett, Carolyn Johnson, Willia Lewis, Geneva Stanback, and Eugenia Younge the group plans to search in all locales where Blacks have held important positions. Beginning in Durham, Guilford, and Wake Counties and continuing in such towns as Fayetteville, Tarboro, and Warrenton, the canvassers will eventually cover the entire state. Chapter members will seek to become active with the preservation and historical groups at the state and local levels. They will also cooperate with any lay groups established in the Durham area. Having become award of the pressing need to collect and preserve arittfacts reflecting the culture of Black people, members of the Durham Chapter are visiting historical associations, museums, and crafts fairs. The Black Heritage Project Committee plans to keep lines to communication open to Mrs. Grace Rohrer, secretary of the State Department of Arts and Culture. The committee chairman, Mrs. Falkener, sees as one of the goals being "sure the state archives contain articles, aritifacts, and documents relating to the history of Blacks or their works." The committee has in its possession a copy of The History of the American Negro, North Carolina Edition, written in 1921 by a Black historian, A.B. Caldwell and is searching for another book entitled The First Ten Negro Families. This book discusses the ten leading Black families in the state in the late 1800's. The committee envisions reprinting such materials and making them available as supplements to public school texts. Among its long range plans the Durham Chapter will attempt to secure a home for its collection, so that it will be accessible for viewing by the public.
