Joe Alston, who said last
month that the right kind
of business opportunity
might lure him away from
his job as head basketball
coach at Johnson , C. Smith
University, got that kind of
business offer this week.
He announced Friday he's
resigning his basketball post
of five years to go into
executive training for a staff
position with Sears, Roebuck
& Co. -
The position was offered
by Richard Edmundson,
manager of the Sears
downtown store on N.
Tryson St., after three years
of observing Alston as an
off-season, partime furniture
salesman. Their periodic
talks, Alston said, had
indicated something was in
the offing. And now that
it's happened, the 36-year

"I've spent a few sleepless
nights over this thing
because . of my love for
coaching," Alston said
Friday afternoon. I've been
looking to move up the
coaching ladder, but since

opportunity that offers me
good chances for
advancement.

Anti-Bus Bill
WASHINGTON Following
the close defeat of an
amendment of ban the
busing of school children for
integration, the National
Association for the
Advancement of measure by
a vote of 47 to 46 were
warmly commended for their
courage.
In a statement on the
vote, Clarence Mitchell,
director of the NAACP
Washington Bureau, said that
the Senators who defeated
the measure "deserve our
warmest commendation."
Supporters of the
amendment that was
sponsored by Flordia
Republican Edward J.
Gurney, he said, "are in the

Fund Raising Project Climaxed
At Raleigh Memorial Auditorium

The greatest fund raising project ever put over in
North Carolina, for the cause of freedom climaxed
at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, Sunday, when
several singing groups, more than 100 mothers and
Roy Wilkins demonstrated that the price ot
freedom is high, but if we all put in a little it will
not cost any of us too much. S3 1.863.95 was the
total reported.

of N.C. Branches, NAACP,
added a new feature to the
annual "Freedom Fund
Day,' ' by inviting several
singing groups, from
throughout the state,
including an orchestra from
Winston-Salem, to set the
stage for dedicated giving.
They . began at 1:00 p.m.
and continued until 3:15.
The response from their
motivation has been so great
until Mr. McLean has
already starting recruiting for
1975.

state's leaders extol him for

Two hundred and eighty
Durham Technical Institute
graduates, the largest
graduating class ever at the
two-year institution, will
receive degrees and diplomas
Friday night in graduation
exercises set for the Central
Civic Center.
Seventy-six graduates will
receive diplomas marking the
completion of study in
one-year programs, while 144 :'

associate in applied science'
