F.30.Mar)(ii 1030 Newi 11:00 Cher An Early Start On Taxes Can Save $$$ '' ' April 15th, the Federal in i eome tax filing deadline - a "day of frenzied activity, or just an other day? 1 The significance of the 15th ' depends on how organized tax h payers are, according to Mr. Robert A. LeBaube, District Di rector of Internal Revenue in North Carolina. "April 15 does not have to be a hectic day in any household," Mr. LeBaube said, "especially when you consider that most of tfie time spent preparing an in come tax return involves locating essential records. The actual Completion of the form takes relatively little time." Asan important starting point, Mr. LeBaube suggested that the taxpayer begin now to gather his records and list his deductions. "Begin with January," he said, "and move forward toward the end of the year. Tally up such items as charitable contri butions, medical expenses, taxes and interest payments. The advantage of starting this pro cess now is that it allows enough time to write or call for missing receipts or records," the District Director explained. "Another advantage of begin ning now," he added, "is that it helps the taxpayer determine the size of the refund he can expect." Another important reason for getting an early start is that the sooner a return is filed, the although these items can be claimed as tax deductions at the fair market value. Here are some suggestions as to the method one might use in compiling the necessary records for the 1974 return. First, get out a copy of last year's return to make sure that no recurring deductions are being overlooked. Then, go through the canceled checks, picking out those which substantiate medical expenses, charitable contributions, interest payments, mortgage costs, etc. Think back have you missed any legitimate deductions to earlier the taxpayer can received which you might be entitled? aretund. According to Mr. LeBaube, the sofa a taxpayer 1 donated to a church rummage sale or electrical appliances given to the local emergency relief fund last sum mer are apt to be long forgotten, As part of your medical expenses, for example, you may include the cost of transportation to and from a doctor's office, by either private vehicle, subway, bus or taxi. Many late, harried filers tend to overlook such deductible items as eyeglasses and batteries for hearing aids. Other common deductions are often overlooked such as the travel cost of taking a job-related college course after work and the cost of storing income-producing property (stocks, bonds, etc.) in a safe-deposit box. Union dues and due to professionaljpcieties are also deductible.
