ft 5 K ." J :l "V; K V PC? 1 Wanted: 5,000 NAACP Members Currently there is a pressing need for greater cohesion within the frame work of this community. Since 1913, the Los Angeles branch of the NAACP has come to the forefront of every civil rights battle that has taken place. Granted, some of the time, there have been people who have differed with the methods used by the NAACP. Yet, it is not to be denied that the NAACP has made gains that would not and could not have been made without the organizational structure of the NAACP. Meetings have taken place at the corporate level, presidents of major institutions have been brought into the picture. Court battles have been won and laws have been passed. All through the efforts of the NAACP. As a point of information, during the strong civil rights thrust of the last decade, it was the NAACP that led the fight. Today, in this city where more than a quarter-million black people reside, there are some 1,800 names on the local NAACP rolls. This is a disgrace. It is a disgrace when one stops long enough to realize that it was the NAACP that broke the restrictive covenants in Los Angeles. It is a disgrace when one becomes aware that the local president, Dr. H. Claude Hudson went to jail in 1925 because he fought for freedom. Now, locaj lawyers for the most part are "too busy" to give a portion of their time to the cause of the NAACP; It. is even more of a disgrace when local ministers pledge memberships and then carry out no more than a token campaign. If there are those who disagree- with the tactics used by the NAACP in the fight for freedom, then it becomes incumbent upon those people to stop talking about what is wrong and begin to make things right by being a part of the action that goes on. The change, if one is needed must come from the inside, and the detractors who stand not helping .their cause or any other cause by talking and not doing. Dr. Hudson, who in addition to being the president of the local branch, is a member of the national board, has stated that by the end of this year, he wants to recruit at least 5,000 new members for the Los Angeles branch of the NAACP. This is a small figure when one realizes the work that has been carried on by the NAACP over the years and the number of black people in Los Angeles. This is not a fight for a select group. Each time the NAACP makes a gain, it makes a gain for the entire black community. Now the time has come for the people of this community to put some teeth into the commitment they claim to have. The NAACP is representative of this community and it can only be as strong as we make it. In years past, the NAACP has shown its mettle. It has proven itself to be an organization of total commitment to the community. The least the community can do is to support it in the most viable manner possible. The NAACP needs the help of every citizen in this community and members of this community have shown . they need the NAACP. Now is the time for all of us to show that we are willing to put forth some effort in the fight for equality instead of letting someone else do all the fighting and dying for us. Make Dr. Hudson's dream a reality. Join the Los Angeles . branch of the NAACP today. -LOS ANGELES SENTINEL -J - This Message Made Possible By The Follow ing Sponsors. Acme Qcalty Co.
