22-THE CAROLINA TIMES SAT.. JANUARY 31, 1976 New Desegregation Study Challenges Coleman Report BOSTON UNIVERSITY -A new study of school desegregation in 86 northern cities challenges the validity of the now-famous Coleman Report, which holds that forced desegregation triggers "white flight," according to Dr. Christine H. Rossell, assistant professor of political science at Boston University. Dr. Rossell, author of the study, says her findings run counter to the main conclusions of the Coleman Report and explode many '"myths" about the impact of school desegregation. Among Dr. Rossell's findings are the following: - School desegregation is not a prime cause of white flight. -Even in school districts most affected be desegregation, white flight is minimal and temporary. - --In districts where ' significant white flight does f occur, it is almost always before the opening of school in the first year of the plan, and rarely after that. -The quality of education is desegregated schools usually rises rather than falls. Dr. Rossell charges that research methods used in the Coleman Report are faulty. She claims that her study, unlike the Coleman Report, examines school districts at least four or five years before desegregation, then four or five years afterwards, and finally compares each district with itself.
