Wayne's education. Her efforts
shone in her work; she was
swift, industrous, willing to
apply herself. By now, she had
become a waitress. All before
the 60's.
Toward the mid-sixties,
Mrs. Smith had prepared
herself for a promotion in the
event there was an opening;
therefore, the step-up came
naturally. Presently, she is
assistant operator, at the
Downtown-Durham Store; a
smart, alert, attentive, happy
person who feels that much of
her success has come only
through persistent use of the
golden rule: "Do unto others
as you would have others do
unto vou."

City was introduced to the
community on Sunday
afternoon, May 2. The re
ception, held in SouITech I
consisted of multimedia pre
sentation designed and
produced by the artist.
The exhibit consisted
of twelve works created
by Bob Jones; the paintings
were follows:
"El Matador," a pastel from
the Pendergraft Collection;
"Morning Bath," an oil
painting; "Disciple's Sons,"
oil and tissue rendering;
"Head Elder," an oil and
pastel; "Water Carrier," an
oil and pastel, and "Festival
Serenade," of mixed media.
Jones' graphics included:
"African Love Song," a
linoleum print; "Court

a linoleum print and
"Anniversary Song," a

prepared two drawings
which were on display. The
paintings were valued hm
$5 to $900.
The audience of over
60 people was totally cap
tivated as the artist dis
played his skills
in choreography by his
interpretive dancing to
Stevie Wonder's "Inner
Visions," and "All Is Fair
In Love."
The next art exhibit
to be sponsored by the
Arts Council at Soul City
will feature twenty two
works on loan from the
South Eastern Center for
Contemporary Art.
SOUL CITY CHOIR
PERFORMS BENEFIT
Residents of Pine Crest
Manor Nursing Home in
Henderson were entertained
on Saturday afternoon, May
1, by the members of the
Soul City Choir, directed by
L L. Bartlett, and also by
the members of the Snow
Hill Baptist Church Junior
Choir.
Mrs. Ernestine Roberts,
Program Coordinator at the
Nursing Home, arranged the
program through the Soul
City Cultural Arts and
Historical Society. The con
cert was very well received
by the audience which
consisted almost entirely of
senior citizens who seldom
have the opportunity to
leave the home to attend
a cultural event. Because
of this lack, Mrs. Roberts
will be working closely
with the Arts Council in
Soul City to bring other
performing artists into the
home.
In keeping with its goal
of total cultural enrichment
for the citizens of the Soul
City impact area, the Arts
Council will be reaching out
to those people who are
confined to institutions.
Soul City Cultural Arts and
Historical Society has ex
perienced tremendous
growth over the last year;
thanks to the financial
assistance of the North
Carolina Arts Council and
the National Endowment
for the Arts.

The moon is actually a gigantic
stone in the sky. It's an airless,
waterless sphere of towering
mountain ranges, craters and
plains. The moon rotates around
the earth always keepings its far
side hidden from our sight. It has
a diameter one-quarter the size
of the earth and is only 238,000
miles from our planet.
