"ROOTS" REUNION AT PEGLEG BATES' -
KERHONKSON N. Y. - It was "Roots" week here at
Pegleg Bates' million dollar vacation resort when more, than
100 members of the Bates family and their intimate friends
from a dozen cities held their. second annual reunion last week.
. -, It was 'a time for reminiscing as the famed one-legged
dancer from Fountain Inn, S. C, and the family laughed, joked
and, cried over their good fortunes and the sorrow of losing
beloved ones in years gone by. They really had come to honor
the one member of their clan, who, despite his handicap at the
age of eight, rose to prominence first in the world of show busi
ness, and then, in the last 25 years, with his wife, Alice, and
daughter, JMelodye, buflt probably the most successful black
owned and operated enterprise of its kind in the nation.
