THE H&A ATWATER FAMILY CLUB
The H&A Atwater Family Club held their first
meeting of the year Saturday evening February 17 at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Alston, Jr. and family on'
OrindoDr.
A short devotion period was led by the president
emeritus, Mrs. Alma Lassiter, who also presided over the
meeting in die absence of the president. Old and new
business was discussed. The roll was called and members
present were: . Mesdames Rada A. Prince, Ethel A. Perry,
Alma A. Lassister, Vergie A. Procter, Magnora A.
Farrer, Lena A. Hill, Ruby A Devine, Edith D.

A delicious repast was served by the hostess, Mrs.
Next meeting will be with Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Caldwell
in Chapel Hill on Saturday, March 17.
FLORAL CLUB HOLDS VALENTINE PARTY
The annual Valentine Party sponsored 'by the Floral
Club of Benezer Baptist Church held February 24, was
a joyful occasion for all persons present. Games
led by club members Mesdames Lois Smith, Addie
Barbee, Dla Mae Evans and Beatrice Turrentine brought
fun and laughter to the party.
The tables were laden with all kinds of sandwiches,
fruits, cakes, nuts and candies and punch and served
to the guests.
. "Love Lifted Me" was enthusiastically sung by
the entire audience. :
Guests from many neighboring churches
enjoyed the hospitality of the occasion. Special
guests invited included two ministers and their
wives, Bishop and Mrs. F. Yelverton and Rev. and Mrrs,
L, W. Reid. Each minister made remarks concerning the
the relationship existing between their . churches and
Ebenezer for years. : "
A tribute to the president, Mrs, Addie Barbee, was
given by a club member for leadership exhibited
through her faithfulness to the club. ' '
The pastor, Rev. Thurman Hariston, with remarks
of welcome to all, had the audience to stand and give
applause to Mrs.- Barbee. He closed with prayer for the sick
an those who were not able to attend.
YAHAMA SOCIAL CLUB MEETS
The regular monthly meeting of the Yahama Social
Club was held at the home of Mrs. Gwendella demons,
Sunday, FEbruary25.
Following the business session of the meeting, a deli
cious meal was served by the hostess

Rosalyn Cole, Pearlie . Haskins, Lauretta Hayes, James

The next meeting will be held March 25 at the home
of Mr. arid Mrs. Kenneth Clemons.

MR. and MRS, ASA T. SPAULDING, SR.
LUNCHEON GUESTS OF CARTERS
President and Mrs. Carter invited Mr. and Mrs. Asa
T. Spaulding, Sr. of Durham, to a luncheon at the
White House on Friday, February 23. The luncheon
was to "Honor Living Legacy Award Recipients", The
National Caucus on the Black Aged.
Mr. and Mrs. Spaulding had recently returned from
Whiteville, the County Seat of Columbus County, where
Spaulding was born. He was the banquet speaker Saturday
night, February 17, where approximately 140 of his
relatives, friends, and other Whiteville leading citizens
tured out to honor the "homecoming" of a native son.
The Mayor presented him a .framed key to the city with
the inscription 'The Honorable Asa T. Spaulding, Sr. -Great
American Columbus County Native'.'. Presented by
City of Whiteville, Horace Whitley, Mayor, February 17,
1979, along with a Resolution of appreciation and esteem
passed unanimously by the City Council.
The Resolution cited Mr. Spaulding "as a native son of
Columbus "County who has become one of America's most
outstanding citizens and has distinguished himself as an
internationally acclaimed business executive, eminent ad
ministrator, noted humanitarian, dedicated churchman, and
illustrious statesman, bringing great honor to his people and
to his native land."
Among others were the president of the bank, three
members of the N.C. General Assembly, Chairman of the
Board of Education, and other civic, business', and educa
tional, and political leaders.

Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Ellis of 3217 Apex Highway,
Durham, announce the birth of a daughter, Sherrie
Lanaye Ellis, on February 10 at Durham County General
Hospital. Mrs. Ellis is the former Miss Edna Tabon.

In preparation for the Tenth, Annual Cinderella
Ball, Mrs. Kay Sullivan of the Studio Dance, directs the
Charm Clinic for the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa,
Beta Zeta Chapter. She is being assisted by a member of the
Xinos group, Miss Valarie Whitted, a ten year student of the

In a talent contest held recently by Zafa Temple 176
' and Zafa Court 41 the following were declared winners:
Miss Rita Hester ( left) of Durham High School, 1st
Wnner-up. In the center is Miss Failya Miles of Hillside
ligh Scool, the winner. Miss Linda Luster (right) won 2nd
runner-up. ' ,
Miss Miles, the winner, won with a vocal rendition

accompanied by Miss Valjean Estes. Miss Hester played an
instrumental solo on the piano. Miss Luster sang a solo and
was accompaneid by her brother on the guitar.
As winner of the contest, Miss Miles was given many
valuable, prizes plus an expense paid trip to Greensboro, .
N.C. where she competed in the talent contest at the.
state level. '
